200 – AI Upgraded

Finally. After a missed comic on Monday and about 30-40 hours logged on this project, I present a special, 200th Edition of Reclaimer. This is my maiden voyage with Flash, and I spent most of the weekend poring over reference manuals in an attempt to learn how to bend Flash to my will. I’m relatively pleased with the final product, and I hope that you’ll enjoy this format, as well. A number of webcomics writers out there are experimenting with Flash as a presentation model, and I wanted to see what a Reclaimer comic would look and feel like in this format. Please let me know your thoughts and opinions, as well.

What I love about this format is the way the canvas opens up a new mode of presentation. I gave myself a 750px by 500px canvas, and as you can see, I let the story sort of wander all over it. I like the pacing, as each button click allows the reader to experience the story at his or her leisure. I do apologize for the lack of a ‘Back’ button, however. I never was able to get that part working, and by the time I got done putting together the story, I was tired, sore, and out of time. Maybe next time (if there is a next time), I’ll figure out how create a deeper level of navigation. For now, a simple refresh of the page should start the Flash file over.

On the downside, this was an extremely time-consuming project—and not just because I devoted quite a bit of time to figuring out how Flash CS4 works. The mere act of setting up the various layers, buttons, transitions, animations, and Actionscript 3.0 code, plus setting up the images in Photoshop the way I wanted and putting all the dialogue in, well, there’s just no way I can devote that kind of time to this three times a week. Friday’s comic will show a return back to the regular image format. I will, however, include my original Flash file here for download. I am, by no means, convinced that the way I built this file is the best or most efficient way. If someone more Flash-savvy than I wants to download it and take a look and provide me with some tips and pointers for making this process easier—and faster—then I’ll be more than happy to consider a return trip to Reclaimer comics in Flash format.

In the meantime, however, enjoy this edition, and thanks for making this so much fun to do. I’m looking forward a long and continuing ride with our favorite hero.

EDIT: I’ve just uploaded a new version of the SWF file with typo corrections, a Restart button at the end, and strategically placed Back buttons along the way. It’s still perhaps not quite perfect, but it’s definitely closer to what I’d originally visualized.

CAVALCADE

We are not familiar with this term. What is a 'mimic AI'?

RECLAIMER

Tran started out as a 'dumb' AI -- one of our artificial constructs designed to do just a few basic things.

TRAN

In my case, I was created to do nothing more than manage a single suit of MJOLNIR armor.

RECLAIMER

The UNSC assigned Tran to me early on in the Reclaimer program.

RECLAIMER

She was particularly gifted at anticipating my needs and managing various aspects of my armor almost before I realized I needed them.

TRAN

Quit it, sir. You're making me blush.

RECLAIMER

My background is in computer hardware and programming, and the UNSC often made use of my special skillset on missions to hack into enemy data networks and extract critical information.

Inset of the Reclaimer's face.

RECLAIMER

Insurrectionists. Covenant. Rogue human governments. You name it, I cracked it.

TRAN

And that was when I started to help.

RECLAIMER

I realized pretty quickly just how talented Tran was -- so I started 'adjusting' her programming. Covertly, of course.

CAVALCADE

You did not want your superiors to know what you were doing?

RECLAIMER

Exactly so. I didn't trust them even then.

TRAN

It didn't matter, of course. They still ended up separating us.

RECLAIMER

Infiltration missions started to go a lot more smoothly and efficiently, as I upgraded Tran's programming. She got smarter, eventually ending up a upper-mid-level AI.

TRAN

The UNSC authorities eventually caught on to the fact that I was responsible for the Commander's higher levels of efficiency...

TRAN

...and they got scared.

RECLAIMER

The UNSC's always had a bit of a "Act now; ask questions later" policy when it comes to acting against perceived threats within the organization.

RECLAIMER

They yanked Tran from my custody and placed me on severe restrictions with constant supervision.

TRAN

They never did find out why I was such a boon to the Commaner, though.

The Reclaimer, just visible behind the barrier.

TRAN

If they had, they would certainly have destroyed me rather than tucking me away in storage all this time.

RECLAIMER

Their oversight is our gain.

CAVALCADE

What would you have us do, Reclaimer?

RECLAIMER

You say Portent has cut off all communication, correct?

CAVALCADE

That is so.

The Reclaimer crouched next to the barrier.

RECLAIMER

There's one mode of communication that it hasn't cut off.

CAVALCADE

We assure you that Portent has cut off every mode of contact.

RECLAIMER

Portent's still monitoring us, isn't it?

CAVALCADE

Yes...

RECLAIMER

Then we have access. We have a visual data stream directly to Portent's core.

Delays

One of the downsides of owning and operating a farm is that weekends are typically spent on upkeep and maintenance. Unfortunately, this past weekend was no exception. I’m working on a special presentation for the 200th comic, and I just didn’t have enough time this weekend to complete it. I’m playing with some new things, so the learning curve has slowed me down a little. Hopefully, the final product will be worth the extra time and effort. I’d like to still get the comic out today but don’t be too surprised if you don’t see it until Wednesday. In the meantime, help yourself to the comic archives and stop in on the forum for a chat.

Driving Drums

There is a Reclaimer comic forthcoming today, but in the meantime, I need some help. I’m looking for a good music track, something that’s just drums but with a driving beat. You remember the drum rhythm from Battlestar Galactica during those brief flash-forward sequences that gave the little previews of the upcoming episodes? I want something like that, only longer, minimum of one minute. Anyone have any recommendations?

Video Editing Machine

Some of you know that I recently acquired a new desktop computer that I’ve set aside to be my dedicated video capture and editing machine. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been working on rigging it out properly in order to get the most out of it. For those interested, here’s the basic technical specs:

Gateway LX6810-01
Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor10 Q8200 (2.33GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 4MB L2 cache)8
Genuine Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium (64-bit) with SP11
8192MB 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Memory (4×2048MB Modules)9
Hard Drive 640GB 7200RPM SATA II hard drive with 16MB Cache4
8-Channel (7.1) High Definition Audio with Dolby Home Theater® Sound
Maximum 8GB
Systemboard with NVIDIA® nForce® 720i Chipset (MCP7A-D)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT120 Graphics with 1GB DDR2 Total Video Memory9

In addition, I added a Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro video capture card and installed the Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium bundle. All together, it’s one powerful machine.

My first capture tests started out well – the first four game videos I captured spooled off perfectly – but then the capture sequence started to lag, hang, and ultimately abort prematurely. A little research revealed that my hard drive wasn’t fast enough to keep up with the HD video being captured to it. Fortunately, this computer has built-in expansion slots for a RAID array, so my next task was to select and acquire two hard drives for that purpose. A little more research, and I chose two 300GB Western Digital Velociraptor disks, which clock in at 10,000 RPMs, 16MB cache, and 3Gb/s data transfer. A quick hot-swap, a RAID 0 config (128K stripe), and I suddenly have a VERY fast hard drive.

As I write, I’ve got Adobe Premiere capturing video footage, and so far there’s been no hesitation or problems. If all goes well, my computer will continue to function at a high rate, and I can really start to think about what I need to do to start work on a Reclaimer machinima.

Website News – Update

I’m frustrated. As with anything technical, anytime you make sweeping changes, it’s inevitable that’s something’s going to fail somewhere along the line.

Yesterday, I upgraded the Reclaimer website and every site on the Halo 3 Webcomics webring to the latest version of WordPress, i.e. 2.8. The initial test installs I ran worked out perfectly well, so I was confident enough to try upgrading on the rest of the sites. The upgrade on the Reclaimer site appeared to work, so I moved on and gave the H3W sites the same treatment. Yesterday evening, I noticed, however, that the Reclaimer site was displaying posts incorrectly. Comics files weren’t showing up on single pages, news items were being rolled into the comics navigation, and the archives were a mess. None of the H3W sites have had this problem. I was puzzled by the problem. I still am. I’ve no idea what would cause the Reclaimer to fail so badly when the other sites are all working as they ought.

I’m not the only one with this problem. Checking the ComicPress forums, I see that there are quite a few others with the same problems. The current solution at the moment is to downgrade WordPress installations back to WordPress 2.7.1, which I’ve done here on the Reclaimer site. I have not downgraded any of the sites on the H3W webring, since they all seem to be working properly. I will not try to upgrade here again until I know that a solution has been found. It seems clear to me that the problem lies somewhere in either the ComicPress theme, the ComicPress Manager plugin, or both.

In the meantime, if anyone notices any additional problems, either here on the Reclaimer site or on any of the sites on the H3W webring, please let me know by commenting here.

Website Woes

As of right now, you may notice that it’s impossible to go back and view any and all comics in the archive. Something has apparently gone terribly wrong with my site upgrade today, and I’ve yet to identify the cause of the problem. I’m also way too tired, sick, and annoyed to find it tonight, so I’ll make a valiant attempt to get things back in order by Monday. It also means that Reclaimer is on hiatus until I figure out this glitch in the system. Stay tuned, and feel free to visit the forum. That, at least, still works.
