Hm, yeah – all this technology and we still can’t control time. Funny that.
No comic today. My weekend schedule was a little… chaotic. Nothing much creative got done at all – it was all business, sadly. I’ll see what I can do to get one out on time for Wednesday.
Over at io9, there’s an editorial about why science fiction does better in movies than in TV. Disregarding my own opinions on which is better and more enjoyable, this quote picked out of the list touches on my approach toward Reclaimer:
Joss Whedon famously said that a television show is a question, but a movie is an answer. That’s why Firefly spun out tons of mysteries, like what happened to River in her special school, or what was the deal with the Reavers. And Serenity, the movie based on the TV show, had a self-contained plot and answered all your lingering questions in the course of two-ish hours. TV shows, especially in this era of arc storytelling, spin out endless plots that reward obsessive viewers—and scare away casual ones.
Comic books are a lot like TV shows in that they drag out plots and sub-plots over an extended period of time, usually raising more questions than they answer. For those whose attention spans can handle that kind of lengthy story-telling, this is a lot of fun because you can mix intense action in with intricate storylines indefinitely.
This is pretty much the way I’m hoping to approach Reclaimer – a lengthy storyline that presents plenty of action while raising lots and lots of questions. In the end, I expect to have something along the lines of a graphic novel with a story arc that’s been brought to a relatively firm conclusion. Whether or not I’ll continue into another story arc with the protagonist remains to be seen. Everyone who has been following the story so far seems to be enjoying it, so I suspect that a lot of that decision will be based on how much my readers want Reclaimer to continue.
“There is nothing wrong with your television set – Do not attempt to adjust the picture – we will control the horizontal – we will control the vertical.
For the next hour, sit quietly,
and we will control all that you see and hear.”
Yeah, sorry about that. What is it with germs lately? Is it just me, or are the viruses more robust this year? I’m only just now really starting to feel somewhat normal again.
Oh, and that website project I was working on? Nearly done. Little fussy on the back-end implementation, of course, but the bulk of the tough stuff is out of the way now, which leaves me a bit more time to work on Reclaimer.
More goodies on the way…
So, yeah, my posting schedule for this week has gotten all screwed up again. The primary reason for this is that I’ve been tag-teamed by the flu and bronchitis since last Friday. Needless to say, I’ve felt positively miserable the last few days. Desperation forced me to the Urgent Care clinic on Sunday to get a high-powered antibiotic and decongestant, so I’m feeling some better now, but it’s been a rough week. I’m finally back to work today, but even so I still have a pretty ragged cough and feel like someone steam-rollered me.
The other reason my schedule is off is because what little work I’ve been able to do around being sick has been devoted to getting a couple of web design projects off the ground for paying clients. The one is a complete, ground-up redesign that I’ve been working on the last couple of weeks and that will hopefully launch within the next few days. So, as much as I enjoy working on the Reclaimer comic, paying customers must come first. I do, after all, have a mortgage to continue paying.
If all goes well, I’ll have Reclaimer back in full swing starting on Friday, hopefully without anymore interruptions for awhile.
