Here it is at long last – the first official Reclaimer contest!
Here’s the deal – y’all are going to have to work for this one a little bit. Start with this image:
Create three more comic pages (not panels) that build from the above image. You can create more than three if you’d like, but you will only be judged on the first three. Entries will be judged on visual layout and quality, storytelling quality, and creativity. If you need a How-To, make sure to take a look at this tutorial for creating a Reclaimer comic.
This is your chance to get involved in the Reclaimer storyline. If you haven’t already, make sure to read back through the Reclaimer archives and get familiar with Viper – then set off running and tell a story about the origins of Viper.
What’s up for grabs? The winning comic will receive an autographed Forerunner image from PAX 2008 (courtesy of Louis Wu over at halo.bungie.org), a hooded Reclaimer sweatshirt signed by the author, 1600 Xbox Live points (contributed by Amer then00b), a signed print from the Reclaimer archives, and a feature spot on the Reclaimer site for your comic.
The contest will be open from today, Sept. 15 through midnight (EDT) Oct. 6. Entries can be submitted either through the contact form here on the site or can be sent directly to reclaimercomic@gmail.com (put “Reclaimer Comic Contest” in the subject line and include your gamertag and/or the name you use to comment in the body of the email).
Anything I missed? Send me a message – and have fun!
Update (16 Sept 2008 0800 EDT): All entries must be built from Halo 3 screenshots. You can submit your entry just as soon as you have it done, and for the purposes of the contest, I will only judge your first submission – so make it a good one. You’re more than welcome to submit more, though, if you’re feeling really creative and ambitious. They just won’t count toward the competition itself.
Update (18 Sept 2008 2111 EDT): Prizes added to the pool of 1600 Xbox Live points and one signed Reclaimer print.

can we has more info on the reclaimer print?
@ PikminGod – The long and the short of it is that the winner will be able to pick his (or her) favorite comic from the Reclaimer archives. I’ll make a print of that comic, autograph it, and ship it out with the rest of the prize bundle. It’ll be an 8.5×11 print.
zOMG i hope i win even more now!!
Will the winning comics (and maybe the non-winning comics) be displayed somewhere on the site? What I’ve seen from people’s recent screenshots (I know, I said I wouldn’t talk about that again, but come on, just this once…) looks really interesting.
dont check my recent screenshots!!loser
@ the silver fox – Um…
@ PikminGod – No need to get testy. The screenshots are only one part of the contest (and are highly unlikely to influence what anyone else does with their own comic submission). I basically only have one rule for commenting here – be polite. Anything that doesn’t ahere to that rule is subject to moderation and/or banning. I’m sure you were just teasing, so simply consider this fair warning.
curse myself for not reading! I’ve done that before, but I wasn’t in the commenting phase yet. Oh well. We all make mistakes.
@ the silver fox – Yeah, it’s no big deal. Just thought I’d belabor the obvious.
@ PikminGod: I get the strange feeling we’ve had this conversation before…
Can’t wait to see who won! This is such an exciting contest!
o sorry…i meant for that to sound more sarcastic…i didnt really mean silverfox was a loser…and not very much can be gained from looking at my recent ss because most of my work is done in gimp anyway…sorry fox if i made you cry…
o btw…submitting now!!
@ PikminGod: Don’t worry about it. My 360 is broken, so it’s not like I have that much else to do.
And you’re quite right. One of the only things looking at screenshots can tell you is who are the characters in the comic and where it takes place. Beyond that, well, not much. Of course, the screenshots for “Visual Echoes” would have likely been an exception to this, but otherwise, not so much.
Good luck on your comic!
Pretty psyched for this.
If we don’t win is there anywhere where we can put up our failed attempts? I want to see some of other peoples ideas and compare them to my own.
@ The Catfish – I intend to create a gallery on the site for all the comics submitted. I think everyone who participates deserves to have their work out there for everyone to see.
how do we send the comics agin
@ bansheeeflier – Take a moment and re-read the directions for the context. All the info you need is there.
smacks head repeatedly and gets knocked out duh
In the contest, are there any rules that will disqualify you ????
what r they… I dont want to get disqualified…. Please help
Will we know who wins ????
and what date will it be anounced ???
@ ME – Just follow the given rules stated above, and you should be fine. Use some common sense, of course. If you have to ask yourself whether your submission is appropriate or not, it’s probably not.
Ok Jim Thx
But there is one more thing….. Since you said that you figured out how gimp Works and all….. Can you tell me how to make a text bubble or how to make a solid colored box I just cant find out how to do it….
Is there a simple explanation for this problem
Thx
@ ME – Yes, the announcement of the winner should come a couple of days after submissions close, so sometime around Oct. 8 or 9.
I can see I’m going to need to write up a tutorial for GIMP. I’m not as familiar with it, since I don’t use it every day, but I’ll see if I can work up some instructions here in the next day or two.
all right….
and the very last question…. ( i know I ask to much, SRY ) is, Do we have to follow the 3 row per page Like the Page given to us
Like it said that we need to make 3 more pages to enter but on each page does there need to be 3 images each or can there be more ???
if so will you be judged on the layout ???
( I had planned a 3 row page but not sure if I need more to have a chance )
any advise ???
thx Jim
@ ME – No, these are your projects. You can give me any layout, look, story you want, just so long as you give me three pages.
All right…. Thats good and bad for me
Good…. I need more than 9 pics
The bad…. I have to figure out the layout with more than 9 pics
i used this…if you follow it to a “T” you should be ok…its how i did my text bubbles…of course i ruined them afterwards…
now that i have turned my comic in i hate it
@—PikminGod
THx…. Worked Perfect
awesome!! now if you win you gotta give me the prize
i was wondering if i could send you the first page now and the rest later
are most of you sending just 3 pages or more ???
Please answer if enter in contest
Well i’ve sent in my 3….then another 3….and Personally I’ve done an extra 4 on top of that…with another few planned in my head which I was going to do today.
But yeah thats not OTT or anything with me not getting into the spirit of things too much.
should our background be the same color same as the first example page ???
Or should it be whatever we want ???
Please help
Part of me wonders if my entry got in, because sometimes in the past, for other contests, it fails to reach the entry email.
@ HolyJunkie – Yup, I got it.
I have a problem…...
and I am running out of time
In the article above it said out comic needed to be 750×1000 ( width / height )
I did that and tried to print and it zooms in and prints in one area and nothing else I cant get anything to print like it should, I needed to print too make sure you can reed the text on paper and then it all crashed,,,,,,,,, I lost it all
I am trying to start over today but cant figure the print problem with gimp…..
Plz
Plz Help Almost out of time
save the file as a jpg then open it in paint…print from paint…it will break the picture down into 3 images, but the sizing will be correct…its the best option i can give you
@ ME – Yeah, as I recall, GIMP is weird about printing image files for some reason. I’d recommend doing what Pikmin recommended – saving it as a JPG or a GIF and printing it from Paint. I’m going to have to sit down with GIMP here at some point when I get time and figure out all the little nuances to making a Reclaimer comic in that program, since I’m really not all that familiar with it.
And to make it 90: I can’t wait to see what everyone does for this!
Hey….
About to send in my Comic Book pages…. Just wanted to know what info do I need to add to the email ???
Name Number etc ????
Please respond…
Thx
@ ME – No offense, but have you actually read the contest rules? The only thing I require is that Reclaimer Comic Contest be in your email’s subject lines and your entry attached to the email. Once I pick a winner, then I’ll email that individual and get their contact info so I can ship their prize out.
ok, Sry… Did not mean to be anoying or anything… Just excited about the contest…..
I will send in my entry late tonight…..
If you could, whenever you get it could you put a comment on here saying you got it with now problems ??? I will say its from ( ME )
Thanks Jim You’ve been alot of help
I sent in my Entry, ITs 10:30 PM
When You Get It,,,,, ( From ( ME ) at supersloppyjo@yahoo.com )
Please Confirm On this Comment Page….
THX ALOT
HOPE I WIN !!!! LOL
I had one more Idea…...For the winner of the contest, is it possible that you print the winner’s 3 pages into a comic book and sign it. That way the winner gets their own work of art published for themselves.
Just an Idea…. It would be really Cool if you could do that…..
