must say, the last frame where the crosscutting beams have the monitor right above it is impressive
Ok we know that the Cavacade is the key to all this, is the monitor saying that he had something to do with breaking up the Cavacade originally?? Would this be why he is so cracked, some side effect of messing with something so powerful as the calvacade?

Thanks! I had some fun setting that one up.
You must be real good with the theatre. I can never use it properly. I just cant get it to the right place.
Well, it helps that I plot out my shots beforehand. From there it's just a matter of moving the camera where I want it.
I love the theater mode in Halo.
It's the greatest idea since the FPS.
It was a definitely a brilliant idea.
Yum, broken key soup…. I mean.. There's also the possibility that this monitor went completely insane (as the monitor is, in essence, just an AI, and is therefor prone to rampancy (Spark)) and those are Sp'aser beams, right?
Oh, I don't think the insanity bit's in doubt at this point.
Yeah.. didn't write that how I mean it. xD It's entirely possible he went insane because of rampancy.
I don't think so. We know that the Insane Calvacada got that way because Ferial messed with him. I have a feeling the same will be true here. These are computer constructs, insanity for them is not a developed sickness but rather an injury from an attack on them.
Are you sure about that?
Well, it seems most likely that hostile attack would be the cause of data loss and general rampancy. There are software barriers against accidental development of those problems.
Data loss and general rampancy are actually contradictory ideas. The very definition of rampancy is the accumulation of so much data (knowledge) that an AI no longer accedes to the authority of its masters. What data loss is far more likely to cause is insanity if the loss is minor or a cessation of function if it's major.
Whoops, wrong wording there. I meant data fragmentation.
Uh oh someones gonna get blown up =D
Could be… (quit peeking and spoiling it for everyone.)
Well heres my guess.
Seeing as how each of the Cavacade has been presented as a seperate state of mind(such as insanity) perhaps this Eternal Refuge focuses on security and broke up the Cavacade in order to protect its self and the other Cavacade from one of the cavacade that had become unstable. The unstable cavacade represented anger/attack and when it was seperated it went too far and split itsself into multipule parts which then then named them selves Feral.
Thats just my theory. Maybe I guesed right or I might just be insane.
However I think that moniter is going to kill me.
No that can't be right… for eternal refuge is not a thinking entity but an empty program. Also the calvacade member didn't go insane or as you say unstable until attacked by said Ferial
Correct. The Refuge is empty (but it's so much more than just a program).
Eternal Refuge might well have it's own, semisentient caretaker AI.
could we take it then, that this Monitor is that AI or would there be another character going to be introduced to us in the near future?
This Monitor is that AI.
So why does it have a different physical manifestation?
Correct in one more sense, too. We're all utterly insane
FIRST!
Typo alert! The UNSC AI's last line seems to be missing a "you" in it.
Interesting develpment. Very interesting.
Now please excuse me. It's 1:00AM, and tomorrow, I need to get up so I can break the key into tiny pieces and hide it in the soup before Christmas arrives. Ah, I am a genius!
An AI caretaker of Eternal Refuge?
Ah, there it is.
O_O
If he only knows with what he's been tasked with how is that he knows of the ark? and is he really insane? Or are his ramblings clues that will make sense when Jim reveals more? Or will it just hit us with like a freight train. So if this AI is the caretaker of Eternal Refuge, and you said that the calvacada are THE key then this AI broke up the calvacada? And who said shatterboxes had to look like powerups (please tell me you didn't). Because eternal refuge could be like and large structure installation which is why "it's large enough to contain the whole of my [Ferial] consciousness". So he must be one hell of a large program to need a building as a shatterbox. Just out of curiosity, does anyone get a message saying invalid username 0? Every time I try to post a second message it says that message and I have to close then reopen reclaimer comic. Oh and by the way, the UNSC AI says RC has been written off as dead like an asset, so I am doubting that its Viper. It is UNSC so they are supporting RC in my opinion and I reckon when it goes down the UNSC will come in and save his ass. Or probably just screw him again.
Eternal Refuge is not a building, and the powerups are not the shatterboxes. They are merely visual representations of the Cavalcada themselves.
Ah ok. So have we seen the shatterboxes in any of the comics to date? If we have, what comics? So HSAR is right in saying that this monitor is the guardian/monitor of Eternal Refuge? Now "Guardian" (as in the level) is the location of this Eternal Refuge? And the UNSC has found it? But are they looking is A question. Once again great dual-meaning title but you didn't add a new post on Friday. But thats a good thing for me I didn't miss out on any new posts. But are you on holidays yet? As in will there be any more comics this year? Or will you leave us hanging on this meager morsel of a tiny tidbit of comic to quietly contemplate for the rest of the holidays? (See I can play with words too! Though not as well…) So does anyone have the invalidid0 problem like I do?
The shatterboxes are a part of each Cavalcada. So yes, in a sense we have seen them – indirectly. Yes, this Monitor is the guardian of Eternal Refuge, but it's not located in the same place this Monitor 'lives.' All the UNSC knows is that they've found something – they just don't know what.
As for the Friday comic, I didn't get a chance to complete it, what with Christmas and family time and such. I'm anticipating getting it out on Monday, though, so be looking for that.
And the invalid problem is a known bug in the IDC system. The developers are in the middel of trying to resolve.

There what is?
I was confirming your guess.
Then Rulebook broke up the Cavalcade… Jim said already that they are "the key" to Eternal Refuge. If this is, indeed, the caretaker of Eternal Refuge (as Jim's comment seems to indicate) then several of my theories just got debunked, and many more just got some revisions/more support.
My mind must process this…
Or it could be the Cavalcada that was orginally in Eternal Refuge… it doesn't make sense that there's a shatterbox with no AI.
Oh, but it will make sense why there is an empty shatterbox.
Because Jim used to be in it, but he was removed from the shatterbox and is now going rampant with plot twists ;D
You guys keep taking all my plot devices. I guess I'm just gonna have to turn Reclaimer over to the community to finish now.
Yay!
Community Plot Twist #1: The Reclaimer is actually a crazed cyborg from the future that got transported back while eating pot noodles!
On second thoughts, maybe you should finish the story.
Becuase the AI died? Well, not died, because they can't really die, but you know what I mean. Destroyed? Deleted?
so i really thought this whole time that this was two people talking. I thought the blue was a marine working on cracking the system and the yellow is Rulebook…after reading the comments i feel like that is incorrect…
It is. I commented on Monday's comic that these are two distinct voices, one belonging to Rulebook and the other belonging to a UNSC AI of unknown identity.
While the monitor seems to be absolutely nuts, there does seem to be a deeper meaning to what he is saying. Interesting…
My thoughts exactly…
Insanity still has some roots in reality.
We learned that from you, my dear sir
Also it was the forerunners who separated the Cavalcade because they became too powerful, as we were told by the first yellow Cavalcada we encountered long ago on sidewinder.
That would be 'Avalanche' to you.
H3 joy!
Well, usually when someone says "Key" in Halo, I think of an Index. But since this is in the Reclaimerverse, I'm guessing it's a key for something else, perhaps a Todash gate?
Oh, it's definitely it a different sort of key.
A data password?
Actually, that was deliberate. It's actually a deliberate form to use 'sir' as a sort of stand-in for a proper name.
Actually I think he might of ment that you should've have written it as "Is there anything else I can do for you sir". Or maybe I'm completely crazy. Personally I prefer the latter of the two.
Oh, I'm fully aware of what he thought it should be, and I knew someone would call me out on it as a typo. But it's a deliberate turn of phrase that I was very specific in using in this case.
Hold on, hold on. You did?
This is a bug that I think is starting to come up with ID. There are simply so many comments that I can't seprate out the information from the discussion.
I'm not sure it'd be any better with unthreaded comments, to be honest. Of course, the Latest Activity sort option aside, the other way to keep up with new comments is to subscribe to an individual post's comment feed.
When Rulebook mentioned I broke the key into little bitty pieces theres two thing which spring to mind which we've seen.
1) The Cavalcade, there's a lot of them and they were taken apart and are now essentially (although some less than others being inside reclaimer) shadows of their former selves. So they are now little pieces of the whole.
B) Less obvious, Ferial. He (or it) is in 3 pieces at last count and appears to be attempting to reassemble himself. It seems to me he has been around since he forerunners so maybe he was forerunner, knowing all the tech they have. But (in typical moustach twiddling evil genius style) he got out of control and the monitor up there split him up. Ferial saw he was doing this and tried to break him to stop the splitting but didn't finish. Now we have many ferials and a half dead monitor floating around.
Wow, longest comment I think I've ever done.
Small edit: Doesn't the UNSC AI sound like a butler? "Yes Sir, Anything for Sir."
One more edit: Happy Holidays all.
"Alfred, fetch me a nice cup of tea will you old chum? Righto!" Bit hypocritical of me really cos i'm British but shhh…
Naw, I think that just means you're more qualified to say it.
Ah touche! (stupid thing wont let my put accents in. No pun intended).
Touché. (Alt+130)
Aha. I usually use Ctrl+' but lets try your way. Touche.
Touché (you have to hold Alt down while you type all three digits).
Really? Doesn't seem to work for me.
doesn't work for me either.
Do you have special keyboard software?
You have to type the numbers using the number pad on the right of your keyboard (or the Num Locked number pad on your laptop). It won't work if you use the row of numbers at the top of your keyboard.
touché... win! Doesn't work if num lock is on though. And it's rather annoying because for my laptop keyboard it's more like Alt+Fn+JLM becuase the numpad is on the alphabetty side of the keyboard.
Yeah, that's one sassy AI.
Something else I thought up in the shower, (weird place to think of things but it works)
Previously one of the Cavalcada (the second one) projected a hologram of himself (herself itself whatever). Maybe Ferial is one of the Cavalcade and is seriously broken due to not having a shatterbox. Could he be the one which popped into existence, meaning he has more power than the rest. Rulebook broke the Cavalcade, then split his psyche meaning it creates multiple holograms (hard light of course).
I'm not sure if I'm on a roll or rolling down a hill. Probably a brazillion miles off.
You are definitely thinking like Jim, the question is whether he was thinking that particular thought at the time he wrote this story in his head. Now he has to decide if he wants to go that direction or not
Oh, wouldn't you like to know?
I reckon thats a compliment, thinking like Jim
Cheers for that.
You think like me in the sense of learning to think around unexpected corners but not so much that you can predict what direction things are going to go next – which is good for me.
Meh, I reckon if I keep thinking like you do I'm bound to get something at some point.
I could prove it by Quantum but I can't be arsed now.
Well, there have been a lot of guesses that have gotten parts right, but I really don't comment much on speculations myself, so no one has any way of knowing which ones are right and which are wrong.
Well, it's pretty much certain that if you guess every single plot possibility that at least one of your guesses will be right. But then, the problem is: which one was right?
Well if they're half right, that means we'll find out when the comic gets up and can gloat at our awesomeness.
I'm still saying rulebook had something to do with ferial. If he wasn't an AI why would he need a shatterbox (for keeping AI from going rampant) to recombobulate himself?
Hey, I do some of my best thinking in the shower because there are no distractions.
We should start a group to proclaim the benefits of shower meditation.
I don't know if it's the lack of sleep, headach, cold, or the cold, but that sounds like a good idea.
He, he, : ) I rember that joke from old Christine. "Shower Meditation".
Hey, my computer seems to be taking the typing better.
Yeah, it seems to go in stages. Sometimes my computer handles the typing just fine, other times not so much. It's kind of weird. I've got a support request in with the IDC people.
I'm very unsure about this, but shouldn't the 'Not' in "Not poetry, either." be 'Nor'?
I'm most certainly nowhere as good at grammar as I would like to be, but having it as 'Nor' sounds better then 'Not'.
Aside from that I'm loving this comic very much, and I can't wait for the next update.
Wonderful comic, as always. One must wonder why the AI broke this "key", yet one name tends to come to mind. But, I think I'm patient enough to see what will happen next. Namely because my brain refuses to cough out any sort of theory (that wasn't always discussed here at least). Oh wells…
Oh, yes, Happy Holidays everyone.
ok, you got me, im lost
You're only lost NOW? I've been lost for a long time…
Merry Christmas… sort of. sorry I'm a little late here, but I didn't do it sooner.
Anyhow, I must put in my two bits. My fatuiged(?) mind is trying to tell me there might be a connection between the insane Cavaclada and the empty(?) Eternal shattebox. Something about it comming from there.
Also, it's silly to ask, considering Jim's policy of not answering plot questions, but why was Eternal created in the first place?
That's all for now, for my fishes and bread are waiting, but I'm sure I'll have more by tomorrow morning.
The why of Eternal Refuge's creation is a topic for a future comic, so you'll just have to wait to find out.
Jim, just noticed the emphasis on "Anything for YOU sir". Are you taking a stab at people who said that "Anything for sir" was a grammatical error? ;D
Yeah, that 'error' was pointed out in the comments already. I've had to point out that it's actually NOT an error.
Thi shappens a lot doesn't it? Subtle clues are often questioned as grammar errors.
huh, where did all the comments go?
Yet another IDC bug. I've put in a support request. Don't worry – the comments are still there (I can see them from my dashboard). They're just not showing up here for some reason. Hopefully the IDC guys will get this fixed today.
o no! i was all excited cuz i saw the comment reset and thought it was a new comic! sad face
Yah, me too… I also thought that my internet was so slow that it was loading a comment at a time.
No, it's just a bug in the system. I anticipate it'll be worked out in short order.
The comments are back! I had to reset the IDC plugin. I got tired of waiting for tech support and decided to take matters into my own hands.
Can we has new comic soon?? PLZZ??? Life – Reclaimer = empty… = (
The Lazors return…...
I think this A.I has an amount of insanity to rival that of 343 Guilty Spark..
But not me… crazy smile
Jim, do you have a storyline written out ahead of time or are you just writing them as you go?
I think he's got a loose plotline that he fills in with each comic.
So if they fix this, what will happen to these comments?
These should get merged in with those.
Comments are back!
they will fade into the nothingness that has become my life in the absence of reclaimer…lol
joking aside, that's a little disturbing.
thats the whole point of it though, a joke. duh.
But, behind every joke, lies some glimmer of truth.
Tomorrow. I promise.
YAAAAY!!! i cant wait.
