It sounds to me like Ferial has been here a while… Every time Rulebook gets toasted he repairs/ restores himself somehow. This would explain why his is insane, as the data transfers are never fully complete. I would suggest that with time they will never happen. Maybe the UNSC AI just came into this cycle of "interrogation" and is disgusted with it, thus the sarcastic/ challenging response to Ferial.

    • Jim (TTL Demag0gue)
      December 31, 2008 at 2:12 am | #

This is the only time Ferial has ever been here, actually, but you would be correct in assuming that Rulebook has gone through a restoration process more than once, with a little data loss each time. The UNSC AI, however, has never seen this process before and is simply on an information gathering mission at this point.

Hum, at this point… that would seem to assume that it will become more and that this AI will now have a nice part in your little story here, I don't know if it was intentional or if I'm right for that mater but you seam to be giving out hints.

        Data loss…
Ah! So it's "insanity" and not "rampancy" for SURE now. Rulebook is slowly yet surely becoming more and more insane. Ferial should be careful with the kill-transfer…or the information he seeks may become lost.

          January 1, 2009 at 6:43 am | #

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'd already confirmed insanity in previous comments.

Mind you, I remember somewhere in the Halo books Cortana came across a way to copy herself with a Covenenant program and then to link herself to the copy to give her more processing power. However, the copying mechanism wasn't perfect and there were errors.

Am I along the right lines here?

Awww, poor Rulebook! And, it appears that the AI seems to be…um…I guess "familiar" with Ferial with the last statement signifying that this wasn't the first time that they've had an encounter. Or, maybe I'm reading too much into the fact that the AI asked "what can I do for you today"

    • Jim (TTL Demag0gue)
      December 31, 2008 at 1:54 am | #

Yeah, you're reading too much into it. Remember, this UNSC AI is an extremely sarcastic personality.

Yes, that is the cronological order is Contact Harvest, Cole Protocol, FoR, Flood, First Strike, then GoO. however, Contact Harvest is following Srg. Johnson. Cole protocol follows Gray squad, (special Spartans). FoR, Flood, First Strike follows Master Chief, and GoO follows green team (Linda, Kelly Curt)

    This doesn't look good.
Ferial conversing with the UNSC AI.
I wonder whether he'll convert him to his side, convince the AI to turn on [his/her/it's] masters or even go rampant altogether.
Similarly he could use it to ge into the UNSC and track reclaimer even though they believe they lost him. Y'know like tweak the scanning settings for huge power readoffs, slipspace jumps etc.

    • Jim (TTL Demag0gue)
      December 31, 2008 at 2:04 am | #

Oh, Ferial already has an idea of where the Reclaimer is and what he's up to. He doesn't need to infiltrate the UNSC to accomplish that.

I have never heard of UNSC AI going rampant, i guess its possible. The way Jim wrote this I get the feeling that this UNSC is ticked with Ferial and thinks it can deal with him.

      • Jim (TTL Demag0gue)
        December 31, 2008 at 2:10 am | #

It's happened several times, hence the 7-year limitation on any UNSC AI. A couple of examples, in Contact Harvest, Sif goes rampant in her last moments, and in The Cole Protocol Juliana is an AI that is already well past her 7-year limit and is in the first stages of Rampancy. So, yes, it happens rather frequently.

Also, in… I think Fall out Reach or Last Strike (I think that's the name?) Dr. Halsey is talking to Cortana, and the subject of rampancy comes up. And Jim, don't say anything else about The Cole Protocol. I just got it last night, so don't ruin it! I still have yet to find Contact Harvest anywhere..

It is also believed that during the level Cortana on the main Halo storyline, Cortana herself went rampant or at least a part of her. So this AI has been destroyed and had to repair itself before now and it loses data each time. So who has destroyed it before, and why does he lose information? Or is that a plot point for later? And it was mentioned above that Ferial knows this AI. Therefore he knows the location for Eternal Refuge thus he's not using RC and the calvacada to find it. Sooooo, the plot thickens even further!

Havn't yet signed up, just trying this out. Now, are we seeing something like a repeat of Mendicant Bias? We know Ferial is connected to the Flood, be it as creator, ally, or another relationship, and we also know that he is extremely persuasive, through force and words. And then there is Rulebook. If he is an exception from the naming rule, that would imply that he has some superiority, even more so as he is guarding the supposedly most powerful of the Cavalcade. I might be barking up the wrong tree, but I just happened to notice the simialrity and thought I'd mention it.

Rulebook is protecting Eternal Refuge, not another Cavalcada, just to be clear. :-)

Does Bayne have a point though? Did you deliberately change the name from the rule to be different or because Rulebook is somehow superior? And what is this rule? I've never heard that AI's have to be named that way… Oh and who named the Calvacada? Did they name themselves? And now I'm receiving a "You're session has expired" comment every time I try to post a second reply. Is my computer or my profile just retarded or is this another bug?

Honestly, my main reason was because I thought 'Rulebook' sounded really cool as a Monitor's name, but it also works out that Rulebook is special and so I can get away with breaking from tradition. :)

    Mmmm Trangia-prepared-boil-in-a-bag-food….not.
Although sitting out on the moors after a long day of hiking in the worst weather imaginable you'll eat anything. Except pot noodle, I refused that.

I don't think that would count to prove the saying

    Or "Cheaters never win?"

Mind you, having watched a pot of water simmering in a Trangia pan for 25 minutes solid on a freezing October morning last year… I'm not so inclined to disbelieve that.

Trust me, when it happens to you you'll never forget it.
