I find this to be hilarious. RC is like the handyman to the Cavalcade.

Cavalcade: Mr. RC, Portent is stuck in slipspace! Can you fix it?
RC: Sure, no problem! grumbles while walking off to fix the problem Darn Cavalcade and their problems…

Yeah, I just have on odd sense of humor. I can't wait to see how RC will fix this problem, however.

Powerful as the Cavalcade are, they're still digital entities for the most part, reliant on the technology which made them to keep them functioning. They need a fully physical caretaker – like the Reclaimer – to tend to the physical aspects of their existence that they can have no effect on.

What about Sentinels, for example? I think it foolhardy to have hyperadvanced superintelligent AI without tools for them to interact with the physical world.

        • Jim (TTL Demag0gue)
          January 14, 2009 at 3:32 am | #

It's a consequence of the Cavalcade disbandment that their 'tools' are no longer available.

It's really nothing like Quantum Leap, actually. There's no getting stuck in another person's body, forced to resolve a conflict or forever risk getting stuck there forever. ;-)

No, it's actually more like getting stuck in limbo.

I'm glad you approve. I've been aware of the lackluster nature of some of the recent comics; it's difficult, sometimes, to keep things visually interesting when there isn't a whole lot of action going on.

    • Jim (TTL Demag0gue)
      January 14, 2009 at 2:19 am | #

When I say 'misfire,' read that as 'hiccup.' The data got pushed into slipspace, but there was a 'hiccup' in the transmission, and the data never got back out of slipspace.

According to one of Einstien's theories Time and Space is relative and the quickest way from point A to point B is not always a direct line. Certain forces in this universe can bend space and time so two relative points are "close" together. Splipspace works by tearing a whole in the space/time continuum so that something can travel from point A to point B does not take so long. Now it would be possible for something to get trapped between these two points without existing here nor there. It would effectively be trapped in the dimension that slipspace occupies. Did that just make it sound stranger?

      • HSAR
        HSAR
        January 14, 2009 at 3:25 am | #

That's the way hyperspace is supposed to work.

It's been clearly stated that Slipspace is a transient, higher-dimensional space where the laws of physics do not always apply. Slipspace jumps take advantage of this for convenient intergalactic travel.

        • Jim (TTL Demag0gue)
          January 14, 2009 at 3:31 am | #

And it's been alluded several times in the Halo novels that there's much more to slipspace than what we know currently. The Covenant have always been able to traverse it much more quickly and accurately than humanity, for example, due to their cannibalization of Forerunner technology. What exactly it is that makes it different, though, remains unclear.

Hold on. Pretty much all – or if not all, then most – of the Slipspace array is still functional, yet there are no more robots, of any kind?

            Ilyich
            January 14, 2009 at 8:00 am | #

The Covenant can only do that because of their mimicry of the Forerunner technology. This is where Bungie/novelists kind of knock off any real explanation, because the Covenant never really took the time to LEARN how Slipspace, their ships, or any of their technology works. They just rely on the Huragok to fix their mistakes.

Except that I don't quite think that's the way slipspace works. I'm not sure it's ever really been explained, mostly because humanity doesn't really understand slipspace.

Great explanation! This still leaves the minor problem of calling cab to get off this installation once the gate is kaput

Some nice photography of the beam BTW

    • Jim (TTL Demag0gue)
      January 14, 2009 at 2:15 am | #

Let me reiterate, since you seem hung up on this – the gate only goes kaput if the Reclaimer sets off an explosion to disrupt the array, since the only way an explosion an would disrupt it would be by destroying it completely. There are other ways to cause a disruption to the beam that won't destroy the gate. Are we clear yet?

Yeah, I was actually just a little annoyed with the RvB guys for that aspect of Reconstruction. I'd had the idea for multiple AI in Reclaimer well before Reconstruction started, and then they went and did that. :) It's still different from what I'm doing with Reclaimer, though, so while the two may look similar in some ways, they're really not.

So part of the data that makes up Intuitive Portent is trapped in Slipspace right? Which installation was he heading to? It wouldn't happen to be the Standoff one would it? Or is that immaterial to the plot? So RC can't just blow everything up, otherwise he won't be able to leave the installation. Physical objects cannot be transmitted through this array can they? Only data and information? Oh and what happened to the comments of 134? They all went back to the old style before the new commenting system?

    • Jim (TTL Demag0gue)

All of the data that is Portent is trapped in Slipspace. Its destination is irrelevant, as it was constantly moving in order to keep away from Ferial's clutches. More than that I won't say at this time.

As for Rulebook, maybe Goddard will shelter him and try to repair him, should he somehow be able to do so.
on the subject of Rulebook…the Monitors of the halo installations have a deadly laser beam that can be fired from their "eye". Does Rulebook not have this? Does he have a different weapon? Does he have no weapon at all?

Suspended in slipspace… just like the "Shield Worlds" of the Forerunner's? Also, since we're on the subject of slipspace suspension… My Halo 3 Legendary Ending theory is that the Chief and Cortana are stuck in slipspace… and the planetoid is one of those Shield Worlds (Possibly even the one that the other Spartans and Halsey are in).

Back on topic, love the shots in this one, Jim, and the dialogue is perfect. Keep up the good work!

      January 15, 2009 at 11:36 pm | #

From what I understand out of Ghost of Onyx, the shield world itself isn't in slipspace, only the inner world through the portal. The "planet" is still in physical space, with a locked portal in the middle. Other than that, this would be a very entertaining theory!

      • Jim (TTL Demag0gue)
        January 16, 2009 at 3:04 am | #

I believe you're right. It's pretty abstract, but I got the sense that they traversed to a space within the shield world that was somehow larger by far than the shield world itself due to the crazy mechanics of being within slipspace. I'm really hoping there's another novel that follows up on this because I'd love to see this bit of Forerunner technology explored further.

Hey AT, maybe you should get an ID account. : ]

No, chief isn't in slipspace, he got left behind around the Ark. He's drifted towards the Marathon world. Its a Bungie thing.

Isn't Red vs Blue the origional?

I didn't say that. I was very careful and specific about my wording. ;-)

Ah, I see where the confusion came in. I should have stated that all the data in a particular packet became stuck, and that packet was the one that Portent was riding on.

I created the link because comments have a way of getting pushed around and resorted, and the link gives a direct path to the comment in question.

    Do a funny one.
    Like my yawning horse.
At least, I think it's funny.
For some reason, ID doesn't like my gravitar account.

Perhaps not, but there're things in Photoshop you can do to compensate. :)

Actually, I took a class in college on SciFi literature, and it looked at a lot of the older "classic" scifi, and I enjoyed it all. It covered several authors such as HG Wells, Gene Roddenberry, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Jules Verne and several others. I also like JRR Tolkien's stuff, though I don't know if Lord of the Rings is exactly scifi! Then of course there are the minds behind Halo, both the game and the books.

I might have to use a pic of one of my lego creations… if I can get one that is identifiable in these small pics

Yeah, um, the Monitors in Forge can't fire an energy beam, much to my chagrin. They're little more than supply modules there.

Yeah, I know, too bad. That would make for some interesting forge battles. I just wanted to say something.

It really would. I'd love to see a bunch of Monitors laser-beaming the hell out of each other. :)

:) Maybe something they'll add to the Mythic maps? One can only hope I guess.

It's not likely that they will. There's a lot of things that I wish Bungie would add to Forge, just so I can make better and more interesting comic visuals. :)

Yeah like an UNDO, UNDO button! I don't know how many times I've accidentally deleted something and the had to delete another half dozen things to get it back into place. And then it just doesn't look the same then.
