I did have fun with it. This one was actually kind of difficult to write because I wrote myself into a corner with my crappy writing last week. So I had to figure out how to get myself out of it. This one went through about four major revisions before I was finally happy with it.
So Goddard and Rulebook died and in their place rose a fusion of two of them. Oh wait I get the name now! Reul from Rulebook and ard from Goddard. That was good Jim. Anyway, another good comic and it looks like Ferial is gonna be in a whole lot of trouble. Reulard seems to know what he's doing and when he said "the Forerunners prepared for this eventuality" it seems like they've been preparing for as long as Ferial has When I first read the comic, I thought Rulebook seemed a little bit too lucid. But both are dead in a way, but their cores are now host to Reulard? Right? And where did thia AI come from? Did it just form from the two dead AI's personalities or come from somewhere else? So many question, no answers at all!
Really? I didn't notice the mix in the font, I just noticed it was different. So you've mixed the names to make a new name and mixed the fonts to distinguish Reulard from the other two? I guess the Goddard personality is most dominant, because he's incredibly lucid and "sarcastic" isn't the word I was looking for but I guess it'll have to do.
Who has the most strength? Ferial is old and physically strong (??) but Reulard has the advantage being able to control a lot of that station (right?). That was just random guessing by the way.
Ferial has strength on a lot of dimensions, most of which won't be fully seen 'til much later. Reulard rules that installation with an iron… fist. In that place, Reulard is God.
Reulard's abilities are limited. It's programming only allows it to do the minimum necessary to protect Eternal Refuge. In this case, Ferial's life is in no danger…
oh… why couldn't Ruelard destroy 1/3rd of the "holy triuminvate" of Ferial
but of course, if he did then Ferial's Virus would be absorbed into the system, and destroy Ruelard!!!
Define "life", I figure you at least mean he'll still be breathing, but if the "viral code" is what I think it is (Program: Dreamstate), Ferial won't be doing much living.
BTW, AWESOME comic, why do the good ones always have to seem short, :@
lol everyone knowss ferial will escape although im probably just saying that coz Jim tries to find a story line to follow that is not what we expect! therefore if i expect this i'll either be right OR ferial gets his arse kicked, win win situation
but what about the machine… if it gets a message to ruelard (or vice versa) they can help each other to destroy Ferial, now ways Ferial can die… goes to sleep dreaming of dying Ferials
I didn't think that Ferial would be finished. I just meant it would be nice for him to suffer an unexpected setback for a change. Serve him not just a slice, but the entire humble pie.
Ferial is way to big for a little monitor to take down no matter what he's capable of. Especially since you've said that Reulard can only do a bare minimun to keep Refuge safe.
Yeah I thought shaky, like y-y-y-you can't d-d-do that! You don't have the the the power! Like a sorta scared stutter. But knowing Jim (I don't really ), and judging by Reulards response, I'd say it would be smug and confident. And Ferial scared? Puhlease. Not gonna happen:)
Yea, like a paradox If everything is a lie, then that message is a lie meaning that everything is true but that means that the message is true and everything is a lie, and so on so forth Or gave him Zip 42 of the 26th century. Wait, It coulda come from the Precursors! Wow.
Super – as usual. But I did have a bit of trouble reading Reulards text – the black outlined white text was kinda hard to read, even on a 22" widescreen. Great writing though!
I'm not sure I understand – Reulard's text is more of a bluish-purple with a darker purple border. There's no white text outline in black anywhere on the page…
I think I've found my new favorite character… and Reulard's "eventuality" line reminds me very much of Vigil from Mass Effect. I'm telling ya, Jim, you would LOVE that game's story if you gave it a chance. Oh and in the second-to-last panel, Why are his words suddenly surrounded with quotes? The text box also changed to a square shape…
I'm learning a few new things about lettering for comics. The square dialogue balloon is for dialogue that takes place where the character is not on-screen. The quotes are to indicate that it's spoken dialogue, as opposed to voiceover narrative.
Jim, when has there ever been a voiceover narrative?
don't answer, it was never, unless the machine suddenly reveals you in it, now that would be a good twist…
Or ferial will get the info and die with it. However due to twintelepathy (triplettelepathy? maybe more) he sends it on to the other guys….you never know….
We've only seen them twice so how do we know, they just haven't planned this galactic domination thing together. I mean spend enough time with someone and you will learn their little quirks.
Oh, dude – believe me. I tried several times to give it a different name, but it kept forcing me to change back again. You do not want to cross a pissed-off AI.
"On the latest episode of of Galactic Domination Wrestling we have a new competitor! Reulard in the Blue corner representing the Forerunners is challenging the long standing champion Ferial in the red corner represemting the Precursors! Stay tuned to find out the results from the latest match!"
But if you buy FerialTel of GalaxyStar pay TV you can watch it again, and again, and again, and again, and again…....................and again. I guess pay tv hasn't changed much in 500 years.
Unless you're a writer, I don't really expect you to understand. After a while, you find that your characters have minds of their own. Most of this story now tells itself. I'm just the conduit.
The charatcers have to have a certain personality, and it is forming in Jims rapidly expanding head. It is very hard to try and convey a certain personlaity without the right name.
No, no – let them continue. It makes it that much easier to write cliffhangers and drop bombshells into the storyline when they think they know what's going to happen and I turn those theories on their heads.
Yea you're right. I shouldn't comment at all. No-one should. I mean, this is a very hard to follow comic, no-one is able to see which way it's gonna go. I was just trying to explain Jim's writers block on the name. And besides and enjoy getting bombs repeatedly and often dropped on my head when I guess in the completely wrong direction. I'll just be off now…
now we welcome the winner of the first 150 reclaimer comics understatement awards…

Well, on the trophy, I got that from DiamondKing, and the patterns I see are: 1) Jim's comments have multiple meanings. 2) Jim never tells you a plot point, 3) Jim often misleads with his comments. Is that what you were looking for?
I thought that was implied with multiple meanings and misleading comments. I've received a few of them myself so I'm fairly sure that's the 3 main ones.
And the winner of the most unprompted award goes to…
Teh Demon, for his recent preformance in this very thread.
Oh, and I'm sorry to inform you, but your trophy was eaten by birds.
No, not all is spoken. See #133 for an example. There's some narrative from the Reclaimer in the dialogue boxes, but it's not spoken. It's merely the reader having the advantage of being privy to some of the Reclaimer's thoughts. It's removed from the direct flow of the events taking place at that time. He's neither mumbling to himself nor talking to anyone else. Hence, it's considered voiceover rather than dialogue and gets a little special treatment.
Dang, I wasn't specific enough. I ment this Specific comic.
Although, I kinda realized since then that it makes more sense if you apply the rule to each pannel separately.
"With your powers combined, I am…CAPTAIN REULARD!"
Anyone who didn't live through Captain Planet won't get it XD. But, I love this new development. As a note, Reulard just sounds hard to say; like one of those words that has a funny feeling as it trips off the tongue. Still funny, though. I love how this only came as a result of Ferial's hubris. He was so smug when he took down Goddard. Ah! Another pop culture reference:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."
Yes, I'm such a geek , and yes, I amuse myself too easily.
nope u sure arent i remember i havent seen it in a hell of a long time nice one Jim i dont think i could have said anything more than diamondkings 2nd comment.
Yeah, I know. But no-one can resist perpetual nagging. It's a tried and true method that I learned at a very young age. And maybe one day even you might slip up Jim. (Unlikely as it is) Until then queue evil laughter
No way!!! Serious? I thought someone else was writing them and was using Jim's name! Wow, my whole life has been turned upside down… You can have my trophy, you've easily won it
file:///tmp/64394806-Full.jpg
hope that works…its a close up of a monitor that i took, thought you could use it at some point? (monitor as in Reulard/Ruelbook)
Id really love it if you could use my screenshot! Also if that doesnt work you can find it here: http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Halo3/Screenshot.ashx…
i dont think my last comment showed up…click the second link, that works. I cant email it to you because i dont have your email adress. You only gave me your screen name and i dont have AIM.
well even if Einstein is wrong; Newton has been proven wrong, experiments have shown results that match Einstein's predictions and disproved Newton; so if Einstein is wrong we have no major theory for gravity.
Yeah, we help him chose paths that may not have been his intended direction. I mean people have suggested some pretty wild things. I'm still crediting Jim with everything of course…
Einstein did A LOT of work about gravity, and space-time; the previously accepted theory of gravity was Newton's (which for stuff like launching satellites or bombing the enemy is all you need).
Tesla had a theory for everything… His gravity theory is called the Dynamic Theory of Gravity, you can look it up on wikipedia and others, the problem is he only mentioned it in one speech and two interviews and all of his papers and research were taken by the government so no one can explain it right, and no one will despite the fact that he made it very clear he intended to…
Hahah! You must've had fun writing this. Looks like Ferial is in some trouble with this one!
I did have fun with it. This one was actually kind of difficult to write because I wrote myself into a corner with my crappy writing last week. So I had to figure out how to get myself out of it. This one went through about four major revisions before I was finally happy with it.
D: Oh wow. Reulard is a badass, or at least he sounds like one. If he can keep Ferial trapped then he can have the title.
Yep, it sounds like Reulard is gonna turn Ferials own virus on him
That'll be fun to watch.
How do you like your vegetables – boiled or Ferialed?
So Goddard and Rulebook died and in their place rose a fusion of two of them. Oh wait I get the name now! Reul from Rulebook and ard from Goddard. That was good Jim. Anyway, another good comic and it looks like Ferial is gonna be in a whole lot of trouble. Reulard seems to know what he's doing and when he said "the Forerunners prepared for this eventuality" it seems like they've been preparing for as long as Ferial has
When I first read the comic, I thought Rulebook seemed a little bit too lucid. But both are dead in a way, but their cores are now host to Reulard? Right? And where did thia AI come from? Did it just form from the two dead AI's personalities or come from somewhere else? So many question, no answers at all!
It's a fusion of the two personalities. I literally blended the colors of Rulebook and Goddard's dialogue to create the new color for Reulard.
Well, we never knew what Rulebook was like before he became crazy, so it's tuff to say.
The man – he has a point!
ALRIGHT!!! REULARD FTW!!! time 2 blow the place 2 hell
Yep, have fun Ferial. This may be one game you're gonna have trouble winning
Or are those over?
It's down to brute force now.
Well it looks as though eternal refuge has a new security system
Nope, it's an old one.
Was rulebook original then? Or was this contingency written in so as to guard against future attacks?
Rulebook/Reulard has always been around in some form or fashion.
Strike me down, and smite me
For the first time ever Ferial, sound like he's not in control.
I know. It's weird and scary. If Ferial is not in control who is? shiftily looks left and right Oh right Reulard! Kickass!
They are all pretty short, but that's part of being a comic.
And it's all relative!
I know, there only, what? six panels at most? but the good ones always seem to read faster…
It has to do with the curviture of space and the density of Reclaimer.
It's all relative (-ity).
Nice, although for all we know Einstein could be like Aristotle, brilliant, but horribly horribly wrong…
But he can still stop or at the least alow and annoy Ferial from gettign to Refuge.
But he can still stop or at the least slow and annoy Ferial from gettign to Refuge.
Awesome comic… Jim
Thanks, Ankit.
Reulard sounds very confident.. I just can't wait to see if he can back up those words.
It'll be very fun to watch Ferial get his ass kicked for once.
Oh, Reulard definitely can – which is quite unsettling for Ferial.
So Ferial is a bit scared at the end then? Or is it stuck up confidence?
I stick by my original answer – unsettled.
Ah okay. Awesome.
No unused or broken code, it all gets recycled…
The machine has somedealings with it…..
No unused or broken code, it all gets recycled…
The machine has some dealings with it…..
lol everyone knowss ferial will escape
although im probably just saying that coz Jim tries to find a story line to follow that is not what we expect! therefore if i expect this i'll either be right OR ferial gets his arse kicked, win win situation
Oh Ferial will escape, but something is gonna happen that's gonna piss Ferial off a lot. That's my guess anyway.
If Ferial escapes its going to be with his tail between his legs running for cover! This is going to be fun!
BTW Jim, love the new font for this character!
Hah! Ironically, it's the exact same font as the one I used for Rulebook and Goddard, both. It's just a blend of their two colors, is all.
I did not know blue and orange make a purpley gray, hmm, cool anyway.
Yeah, the midpoint between the two is what you see above.
That's right… suck it Ferial. You are finally going down. I have so been waiting for Ferial to get his ass handed to him.
Oh but I don't think he's going down just yet.
Despite what I've said. There's a way to go yet.
Are you kidding? Ferial's just a little too big even for Reulard to take down. But it can definitely set Ferial back a bit.
but what about the machine… if it gets a message to ruelard (or vice versa) they can help each other to destroy Ferial, now ways Ferial can die…
goes to sleep dreaming of dying Ferials
Why does everyone want Ferial to die so much?
Not die exactly, just get into a world of hurt. It'd be good to see him on the back foot for once
I didn't think that Ferial would be finished. I just meant it would be nice for him to suffer an unexpected setback for a change. Serve him not just a slice, but the entire humble pie.
I don't think Demon feels the same.
Mmm, humble pie.
It's much better than humble cake.
But I like cake!
well, humble cake is better than humble jello…
But every diet needs a little wiggle room!!
Ferial is way to big for a little monitor to take down no matter what he's capable of. Especially since you've said that Reulard can only do a bare minimun to keep Refuge safe.
What Reulard is capable of and what it's allowed to do are two very different things.
Ohhhhh. SO he is capable of taking down Ferial, but his programming prevents him from doing so? Oh msn that would have to suck.
Less a case of restrictive programming and more a case of restricted directives.
so, if ER was captured Reulard would have no purpose, so then he would be allowed to kill Ferial!
Or he would blow up…
Reulard is allowed to use lethal force if the situation warrants it. It doesn't in this case, so his actions are dictated as such.
"Take whatever you think you know… and cram it."
I love that line
It sounds so… human! You can really hear the remnants of Goddard in Reulards speech paterns.
Question for everybody – how did you "hear" ferial speak his last line? Smug and confident, or slightly shaken and doubtfull?
Yeah I thought shaky, like y-y-y-you can't d-d-do that! You don't have the the the power! Like a sorta scared stutter. But knowing Jim (I don't really
), and judging by Reulards response, I'd say it would be smug and confident. And Ferial scared? Puhlease. Not gonna happen:)
Yeah, I don't think there's much in the universe that could scare ferial, but I got a vibe that he's starting to feel the first seeds of doubt.
"He can't do that… can he?"
unsettled…
Yeah, that was definitely Goddard coming through there.
Oh yeah, and I think I figured out how Ferial nuked Goddard:
He sent him a text file that said "everything I say is a lie," and goddard's brain imploded
Yea, like a paradox
If everything is a lie, then that message is a lie meaning that everything is true but that means that the message is true and everything is a lie, and so on so forth
Or gave him Zip 42 of the 26th century. Wait, It coulda come from the Precursors! Wow.
Is the answer to this question no?
There is no answer. That's why it's a paradox
And it's hardly a yes or no question.
I think they're in quotes because there's no character on screen… that's the only explanation I could come up with
I'm learning a few new things about lettering for comics.
It's a narrative device I've used several times in the Reclaimer storyline. Just check the archives.
Like when RC first found the Slipspace beam that Portent was stuck in and when Ferial and that Calvacada were doing their monologues.
Exactly so.
I'm still confused.
Isn't all the dialogue in this comic 'spoken dialouge'
And what do you mean by voiceover narrative?
Ah, I was close…
Actually, you were dead on.
What did he say?
It's the only other post Lego Builder has in this thread.
At the time of writing.
Hehe, I was close, but not quite dead on… I mixed the two reasons into one, so I was darn close
Or ferial will get the info and die with it. However due to twintelepathy (triplettelepathy? maybe more) he sends it on to the other guys….you never know….
Woh, where did that come from?
Good question. Jim has never suggested that the triumvirate was capable of telepethy.
and yet they always seem to know what the others are doing, they walk in and finish the other's sentence…
We've only seen them twice so how do we know, they just haven't planned this galactic domination thing together. I mean spend enough time with someone and you will learn their little quirks.
Reulard and the Machine are similar in some ways, yes, though their basic functions and ultimate handling of information are different.
Jim, are you big on recycling? : ]
Reulard is not recyclable.
But his personalities were. Still what happens if Reulard blows himself up repeatedly?
that name is GROSS
I'm glad you like it! ;-P
Reulard? I expected a bit more creativity…
Oh, dude – believe me. I tried several times to give it a different name, but it kept forcing me to change back again. You do not want to cross a pissed-off AI.
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh, i felt shivers go through throughout this whole comic… absolutely great
I love it when Reclaimer inspires these kind of reactions.
Wort. Looks like his Precursorness is looking at a little brawl. I've been looking forward to this.
>"<
Haven't we all?

Ooh, when's the Pay-Per-View?
looks at watch
In 3… 2….
What! You're charging us?!
no, no, 2552 Olympics remember, so… wait, yes.
Ah well, I guess governments suck in 500 years still.
Aww, it happend 16 hours ago.
I missed it. : [
But if you buy FerialTel of GalaxyStar pay TV you can watch it again, and again, and again, and again, and again…....................and again. I guess pay tv hasn't changed much in 500 years.
so… it reached out of the comic and told you off… right…
Unless you're a writer, I don't really expect you to understand. After a while, you find that your characters have minds of their own. Most of this story now tells itself. I'm just the conduit.
Godbook would have been an AWESOME name
Of course YOU'D think so…
I hate to say it jim but Godbook fits the personality A LOT better.
Oh my god, that would have been an awesome name!
You didn't write the comic but. SO whatever Jim has written is probably for the best
For him anyway.
The charatcers have to have a certain personality, and it is forming in Jims rapidly expanding head. It is very hard to try and convey a certain personlaity without the right name.
Quick give Jim some pie, lest his head becomes too big!
BOOM too late
Funny how readers always think they know what the author is thinking, or what he is like. Stick to critiquing the story, you will do better
Scarecrow118! please accept a mental golden Ruelard statue & Reclaimer Bust
Haha. That was good. But please, I really don't need an award. I mean I just have a knack for stating the obvious that most people don't have
Hey, man – my nickname in my family is Captain Obvious.
never would have guessed that, haha
Yeah, I guess that doesn't convey into your writing.
b/c he's trying to keep us on the edge, and he's not actually talking to us; that would be so weird if he did…
Mine calls me Mr. T…
Unless you're a writer, I don't really expect you to understand. After a while, you find that your characters have minds of their own. Most of this story now tells itself.
wow, i love Reulard…but i prefered the name: Rulebook…oh well! This is great, two personalities that go so well together…in the same body!!
I preferred it, too.

I'm still confused.
Isn't all the dialogue in the comic 'spoken dialouge'
And what do you mean by voiceover narrative?
I don't care to much for Rulard's name either.
Pronounce it 'Roy-loard'. I think you might like that better.
The following reply, is a lie.
That's true…
Therefore his Nevets comment is true which makes Jim's comment false which makes Nevets comment tru, etc,etc
We shall now take a vote to give scarecrow the title of captian Obvious.
All that say yay?
Harsh. But I like trophies so yay!
so here i present Scarecrow with the official captain obvious cape & the Ferial bust!
But, we didn't finish the vote yet.
Don't be so hasty, we don't want the other nominies to feel like they don't have a chance.

Y'know, I think I'm going to have to bestow my Captain Obvious nickname on you, you keep this up.
But I already got a trophy. And I just have picked up a few patterns in your commenting.
What do you mean?
Well, on the trophy, I got that from DiamondKing, and the patterns I see are: 1) Jim's comments have multiple meanings. 2) Jim never tells you a plot point, 3) Jim often misleads with his comments. Is that what you were looking for?
Good enough.
What isn't that right, or have I missed something?
oh you missed point #4)
What's point 4?
;
) is point four. :)You seem to forget that he often alters the meaning of questions and gives answers that don't tell you what you wanted to know.
I thought that was implied with multiple meanings and misleading comments. I've received a few of them myself so I'm fairly sure that's the 3 main ones.

Thanks for the pronunciation key; now I can say the name. And, no problem; I knew I couldn't be the only one ^^
nope u sure arent i remember i havent seen it in a hell of a long time nice one Jim i dont think i could have said anything more than diamondkings 2nd comment.
I used to say like Rule and ard, the splits of Rulebook and Goddard. In my head it would have been spelled like Ruleard
Oh well
That was the way I'd originally intended to spell it, but I had a typo as I was working on it and decided to keep it.
Well, the typo gave it a completely different pronunciation that I actually did like.
I get it now. So even if you didn't like the name you chose the name that you liked the best?
Sort of. I really did want to use a different name, but that one wouldn't leave me alone.
And a new superpower enters the fray…..
He's not really a superpower, just a bit of a bockage to slow Ferial down. Maybe drop an few things on his head
It's not that kind of installation….
I didn't mean literally…
I'm well aware…
So I'm wrong in my assumptions yet again?
You should know by now that I'm not going to tip my hand in the comments unless doing so poses no threat to revealing potential spoilers.
Yeah, I know. But no-one can resist perpetual nagging. It's a tried and true method that I learned at a very young age. And maybe one day even you might slip up Jim. (Unlikely as it is) Until then queue evil laughter
You might be surprised just how long I can hold out. (Hint: longer than you can.)
that's what she said…
I have a spray for that sort of thing.
Good one. Is this the payback you planned for me from the last comic. I have to LOL at your comments. Thanks for bringing a bit of humour in.
I love the new character, he's awesome. Well, except his name. It even looks like the moniter is shinier.
Lol at the Starwars and Captain planet references
If it is, It's probably photoshopped. I didn't notice it but.
Oh, I'm sure it's just me.
Tra la la, out of my maw.
Nope, no Photoshoppery. That's just the way the Monitor looks.
Oh, my bad!
Wow, I just realized;
Jim creates comics!
No way!!! Serious? I thought someone else was writing them and was using Jim's name! Wow, my whole life has been turned upside down…
You can have my trophy, you've easily won it
Wow! My name is Jim!
*hands over trophy

hope that works…its a close up of a monitor that i took, thought you could use it at some point? (monitor as in Reulard/Ruelbook)
Id really love it if you could use my screenshot! Also if that doesnt work you can find it here:

Or – you could just email the file to me.
i dont think my last comment showed up…click the second link, that works. I cant email it to you because i dont have your email adress. You only gave me your screen name and i dont have AIM.
sorry its there now…lol /
the second link works, just click that. I dont have your email because you only gave your screenname…and i dont use AIM.
so a revamped security system
Like using infrared lasers instead of laser light?
Sort of… You know how Goddard and Rulebook were subsumed into the entity of Reulard? That's not the first time that sort of thing has happened.
well even if Einstein is wrong; Newton has been proven wrong, experiments have shown results that match Einstein's predictions and disproved Newton; so if Einstein is wrong we have no major theory for gravity.
*cough *cough String theory *cough
I believe two separate experiments have proven parts of string theory wrong…
Hey, all theories start off flawed.
But, if we all start guesing, we'll leave no other way for Jim to go.
Yeah, we help him chose paths that may not have been his intended direction. I mean people have suggested some pretty wild things. I'm still crediting Jim with everything of course…
so, if ER was captureg Ruelard would have no purpose, so then he would be allowed to kill Ferial!
I'd have to say the same for you. : ]
or tesla's theory for it… also, when did newton become relevant?
Einstein did A LOT of work about gravity, and space-time; the previously accepted theory of gravity was Newton's (which for stuff like launching satellites or bombing the enemy is all you need).
Tesla had a theory of gravity?!?!?
Tesla had a theory for everything… His gravity theory is called the Dynamic Theory of Gravity, you can look it up on wikipedia and others, the problem is he only mentioned it in one speech and two interviews and all of his papers and research were taken by the government so no one can explain it right, and no one will despite the fact that he made it very clear he intended to…
Kinda what I just said.
that wasn't there when I posted, oops…
