[The Reclaimer standing behind a blue energy shield, a projectile on rapid approach.]

CAVALCADE: We have detected another launch, Reclaimer.

CAVALCADE: Recalibrating your armor to project a low-yield energy barrier at safe distance.

CAVALCADE: Brace for impact.

[Energy exploding around the Reclaimer as the projectile impacts the shield.]

CRACKLE! FZZT! SHKKKKT!

RECLAIMER: Huuuuurrrrk!

[A second projectile whizzing past Reclaimer in close proximity.]

SHKKKR!

CAVALCADE: A second volley detected, Reclaimer.

CAVALCADE: It would be wise to find some cover, Reclaimer. Intuitive Portent seems most insistent on destroying us all.

RECLAIMER: Way ahead of you, boys. We need to regroup and find an alternate approach.

[The Reclaimer walking down a corrider, the sky framed behind him.]

CAVALCADE: Portent has closed all communication with us. We are no longer able to dialogue with it.

RECLAIMER: Why do you suppose Portent has gone psychotic all of a sudden? You were communicating with it just a little while ago, weren't you?

[The Reclaimer looking out over the space between the two sides of The Narrows.]

CAVALCADE: Indeed, we were. We are, at the moment, at a loss to explain it.

CAVALCADE: One thing seems clear, however - something changed Portent while it was caught in Slipspace.

CAVALCADE: We may not even be dealing with the same Portent we once knew.

[Looking up at the Reclaimer from ground level.]

RECLAIMER: Would Portent's shatterbox have protected it from the kind of damage you're talking about?

CAVALCADE: The shatterbox would have protected it from all but deliberate changes. Fortuitous Destiny, for example, was altered with clear intent from Ferial.

CAVALCADE: It is our hypothesis that Portent was similarly mistreated while in Slipspace.

Thats a nice second frame :)

Hmmm following from what we allready know can we rule out the damage in slipspace as he was fine when communicating with Ferial and earlier and it is only now with the influence of a 'insane' cavalcada. So from my point of view he appears to have considered ferial's offer

I really love this current plot twist. I can't wait to see how it is resolved.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. I actually had an epiphany last night that's going to make it even better. :)

Thanks, I had fun making it. Did you know that the deployable covers actually expand a little when they're destroyed?

but (humor me for a moment) what if he was altered in slipspace? that brings up a whole new set of questions, like who (or what) could have done it?

The meeting with Ferial might not necessarily have happened in realspace, though, right?

I'm willing to entertain the possibility, though I've got a feeling that it didn't, which of course mean absolutely nothing.

He may already have been problematic while dealing with Ferial, of course. Just because he appeared sane then doesn't necessarily mean the he was so.

Of course, Ferial may simply have left a virus after communicating with him.

    • Larrykan
      Larrykan
      April 8, 2009 at 7:29 am | #

Yes but it is still in Ferial's best interests to have the reclaimer alive. Also from what I can tell he wants reclaimer to unite all of the cavalcada.. possibly so he can destroy them all in one go?

I suppose its possible that damage in slipspace coupled with an insane cavalcada would lead to problems…

the real question is how is he going to get around all of this to unite portent with the ones in his head?? brute force or sneak attack :)

    • Jim Stitzel
      April 8, 2009 at 10:22 am | #

Rocket launcher, actually. I really wanted to use a fuel rod cannon, but you can't have one of those on Narrows, which was both disappointing and frustrating.

Hehe, I had a little bit of fun coming up with those. It was actually kind of difficult trying to figure out how the sounds I was hearing in my head should be spelled. I'm still not sure I quite nailed it, but they're at least close.

What do you mean? When they're damaged, or when they're actually fully destroyed?

    • Jim Stitzel
      April 8, 2009 at 11:32 am | #

When they're fully destroyed. As they collapse and ultimately explode, they actually expand by roughly 30% first. I only noticed it because I was advancing the film frame by frame looking for the ideal screenshot.

I would surmise it is Bungie's ingenuity that included a moment of energy dissipation caused by the breaking of the force keeping the energy contained in a shield form, resulting in the appearance of an expanding shield.

Very good…i guess this rules out my first theory, although i was already starting to dismiss it from my mind. So…now all is left to know is:
    -Why Portent is attacking Reclaimer.
    -What Portent is attacking with.
-What Ferial's offer was and if Portent took it.
-And how Reclaimer can project energy covers from his face… (jk)
I like the sound effects in panel 2, they seem fitting :-D

You are right, i forgot that…the next comic explains some of what i was thinking…maybe the energy covers he projects from his face are due to the mini shield worlds inside his head… :-D

In the time it takes a rocket to reach Reclaimer, I don't think that the calvacada could speak that much, unless they speak in intention rather than in words.

    • Jim Stitzel
      April 8, 2009 at 10:36 pm | #

It's difficult to portray actual time in a comic, since are the images are, by necessity, static. A lot of things happen in rapid succession in these panels, and you have to assume that a lot of the dialogue is, for instance, taking place between where the Reclaimer is standing in the third panel with the projectile whizzing past him to where he's standing as he's walking down the corridor in the fourth. This isn't machinima I'm doing here. ;)

Greetings, been reading RC for a while and i enjoy it. My hypothesis is that Intuitive Portent Is deliberately trying to keep from being joined because he knows it is somehow part of Ferial's plot, whatever that plot might be. And he might be trying to buy some time to figure out just how being joined helps that plot. Or i could be wrong. Either way, i am really looking forward to having a few questions answered. Great Job!

I try not to have a tone, and simply state facts as they are unobscured by false facts.

That's a fancy way of saying 'no, I have not'.
