Three Flood combat forms roaming about in the dark.
VOICEOVER: The Flood.*

*Translated from an unidentified file.

VOICEOVER: A powerful infestation of rogue DNA, an infection far more virulent than was originally conceived. Somehow, it mutated even before its original introduction into a population, exceeding its specifications and becoming a mindless hunger with no direction but the source of more food.

A human combat form, holding position.

VOICEOVER: Imagine my surprise when the first Proto-Gravemind appeared. I had thought the Flood a failed experiment.

VOICEOVER: Of course, later I would realize that my first instinct was correct.

Another human combat form, emerging a harsh glare.

VOICEOVER: But the Proto-Gravemind gave me pause to consider that, just possibly, the mutation would yet yield a viable outcome, albeit one far different than my original vision.

A UNSC Marine being killed by Brute combat form.

VOICEOVER: The transition of Proto-Gravemind to the full sentience of Gravemind put a quick end to that misconception.

VOICEOVER: The Gravemind was irreconcilable and uncontrollable. Its mind bore little resemblance to my prototype, its omnipresent desire for 'one-ness' the only link to its predecessor.

A human combat form firing a weapon.

VOICEOVER: I have outlasted dozens of Graveminds.

VOICEOVER: The Flood infection holds no power over me.

An Elite combat form firing a flame thrower.

VOICEOVER: Soon, the Flood, too, will become subservient to me, as it was meant to from the beginning.

VOICEOVER: The so-called Reclaimers will be the vessel by which I effect my dominion and introduce true and lasting peace -- finally!! -- to the universe.

Those are some excellent pics of the flood, especially the one with the flame thrower, you don't see much of those.

Yup. Kudos to the guys who capped them. I do enjoy the Tags feature of B.net. There's a lot of great content out there.

very nice photo work here Jim, I give it a 10/10

Well, I can't take credit for those, aside from searching B.net for 'Flood' pictures. All I did was pick six that looked cool. :)

Yeah and there is an alarming shortage of Flood photos isn't there? :) Makes it a real pain to find enough to do a group of comics on.

I think the flood were utilized great in the first game as a horror tool, but in 2 and 3 the Gravemind ruined the whole "Space Zombie" Idea, even if it allowed them to fly ships and drive cool cars. When the flood start acting intelligent, the game just feels wrong.

On the other hand, the Gravemind was pretty cool the first time you saw it, until you noticed that at the end of cutscene you were wondering "what the hell just happened?".

          • Jim Stitzel
            May 19, 2009 at 1:54 am | #

I dunno. I find the whole concept of the Gravemind to be utterly horrific. Lethal, damage-resistant, zombie-like beings are scary enough, but when you add a malicious intelligence to the mix guiding the whole Flood network, it goes from horror to despair.

I assume this is Ferial plotting again. I'll be interested in how he intends to get the flood to serve him. I also agree with Lupus…

    Can't… Resist… I'm… Sorry…

Its not lupus… Its never lupus

    • Jim Stitzel
      May 18, 2009 at 12:45 pm | #

Yup, it's a Ferial voiceover. I didn't mean it to be that way, but my first three drafts just didn't feel right.

Nice work, though a huge sense of deja vu… Oh wait, my comic :) Did you still want me to write up the story line for the flood? And these screenshots are all of Bungie.net. That's where I found mine, and they are actually quite good. All Tags rule!!

    • Jim Stitzel
      May 18, 2009 at 12:46 pm | #

It's entirely up to you, sir. There's a lot of room for telling a Flood backstory. It doesn't even have to line up with official Reclaimerverse canon if you've got your own take on the subject you want to weave into a storyline.

A bit risky, though, considering the relatively small amount of information so far (this comic has been the most informative in terms of RCverse Flood).

D'oh! I was going to write about the Flood for Sentience, project #3. He's going to beat me to it :D

        • Jim Stitzel
          May 18, 2009 at 5:15 pm | #

In some respects, a small amount of information is the perfect jumping-off point for some decent fan fiction. I mean, we know almost nothing about the Precursors, but I'm using what little we do know (and what hypotheses have been posited) to create my own lore about this most ancient of races. :)

I'm scared too, but that was until I started playing half-life 2 and noticed how utterly harmless the headcrabs were. Then I thought of the flood (a.k.a. head crab ripoffs) and all my troubles went away!

    Very interesting, Jim.
And I do like the line "Failed experiment".
Means that Ferial doesn't think so high of the flood.

You know, I found it confusing how we are constantly refering to Ferial as a single person.

If anybody can name the machine, can one of the Ferials meet it and name it Melancholy.

I really wan't to see the machine again.

      • Jim Stitzel
        May 20, 2009 at 1:59 am | #

The Machine will always be 'The Machine' – capital 'M'.

          Snowxing
          May 19, 2009 at 10:37 pm | #

But will it ever be seen again?

I know most don’t care about the Machine but I honestly like him more than the Ferials. His motives were clear but you couldn’t tell if he was friend or foe. Such a charactor simply cannot be ignored. It’s against the law or something.

No, several times throughout the Halo trilogy and the books, the Forerunners have called the human race, the Reclaimers. It has been hinted that they are a direct descendant if their species.

The terminals make it fairly clear that humans are not forunners,

          But humans are thier heirs…

        • Jim Stitzel
          May 19, 2009 at 1:55 am | #

Exactly. Ferial is clearly making a distinction between the man and his race here.

ok the reclaimers are spartans theyre related to the "forerunners"the things that created the halo rings A.K.A Guilty Spark343 "the oracle" 's brothers

      • Jim Stitzel
        May 19, 2009 at 1:58 am | #

Not quite. 'Reclaimer' was the Forerunner term for their inheritors, a.k.a. the entire human race. This is actually pretty clear in Contact Harvest when the Covenant stumble upon humanity and mistake the Reclaimer symbol on their displays for Forerunner artifacts, rather than an actual race of people.

You probably won't tell me but…

will we be seeing the halo's in the future?

And I really like the Reclaimer vs MC Idea I had for a prequel that I asked about earlier. It would be less 'mystery' oriented but as a small ten to twelve issue side comic it would be awsome. You should include a little side story unrelated to the rest of the series like that every now and then, sort of like that custom comic thing you did a few weeks back.

        • Jim Stitzel
          May 19, 2009 at 1:52 am | #

It's highly doubtful. My whole premise for the Reclaimerverse storyline was to ignore the Halos completely. I wanted to do a story that didn't revolve around them, except maybe in a very passing manner. So, while the Halos exist in the Reclaimerverse, no one – not even the Covenant – have discovered their presence, and so, for the time being, they will pass out of time and knowledge.

Oh my god, you just figured out Jims big plot twist. That's why ferial states in this comic that he wishes to control the flood. The gravemind would be perfect. Take the Central Intelligence and the rest follow, look at how the aliens controleed out govornment by brainwashing the Congress.

I love the real-life analogy you drew here, but with the flood it's not exactly the same. With the flood, if you take the gravemind you take ALL OF THEM. They are a hive mind, essentially, and each individual flood "unit" is more of an extension of the body of the flood, and the Gravemind is the brain.

I don't have one, unfortunately, and no way to acquire one at the moment. My primary medium is piano (tuba/clarinet secondaries, violin tertiary), and I don't have the recording equipment to capture a sample. If I ever do, though, I'll be sure to post a link.

The Flood always serves to make things just a little more interesting. I'm curious as to why Ferial hadn't just destroyed the Flood completely, however the two possibilities are obvious: he couldn't or he wouldn't. I'm more inclined to believe that he wouldn't since the Flood appear to factor into his grandiose plot.
