In times of war, soldiers are sometimes known to destroy strongholds and fortifications behind them as they advance (or retreat) in order to either prevent the enemy from making use of the same fortifications or to prevent the enemy from acquiring knowledge which may prove advantageous.

He made a baaad mistake. No-one can control the Flood! Still serves him right. I wonder if Ferial made this shatterbox, or it was found? And I thought the shatterboxes were the little powerup balls?
Still glad to see you're still around Jim, keep it up! And I like the mouseover text, good reference to the beginning
remember, ferial created his own shatterbox, which had to store his complicated conciousness. since he has apparently outwitted the cavalcade for eons, I'd suggest ferial had to have more hardware outside slipspace (including some room to think) to store the entirety of himself without degradation
Well, remember, Precursors had the ability to upload their consciousness into a computer, or digitized format. Basically, to store his intelligence, he needed a shatterbox. Then he realized that he would need a body to complete his task, so he created the Sanghelli's. He used it as an escape
He went back to a physical body probably because "If you want something done right, you've gotta do it yourself."
And he broke his shatterbox because 1. He never was sane to began with 2. "My shatterbox, if I don't use it no-one can, AH HAHAHA!!!"
And remember, Ferial was never an artificial intelligence. A shatterbox isn't necessary for his preservation.

The Geneva Conventions were designed to be a set of guidelines for the humanitarian treatment of the victims of war. Writing an international law banning the practice of "scorched earth" was a way to help ensure that non-combatants would still have the resources to at least survive in the aftermath of battle.

Well, the Geneva Conventions were written well after that—and I'm sure WWII was a major influence on those laws.

Yep, I remember hearing that to torture, Japanese shove bamboo splinters under your fingernails, smash cigars on your face, and in one case a Japanese general even ate his enemies guts. ICK.
Part of it is diplomacy, part of it is the threat of multiple countries bringing their combined power to bear against violators. I don't think anyone expects the Geneva Conventions to eliminate war crimes, just help reduce the number and severity.

It's harder to do than you might think. When your characters don't move around much, the scene behind them has to.
My recent post Fallen Out of Favor: AVG
Another issue I have: If Ferial was infected, how did he have the time to transfer his consciousness? We've seen how fast the flood infects organisms, so how could he have time to transfer all of his intelligence in mere seconds? Unless the shatterbox can facilitate a massive amount of data transfer, or the Precursor body doesn't get infected as fast, then there isn't a way he can transfer so much in such a sort amount of time.
On top of that, how the heck do the Calvacada know? I mean, they weren't around when the Precursors were, they're Forerunner. So they can't really know the history of one particular Precursor, even an arch nemesis, from ordinary sources. And there isn't such a thing as "heavily infected" when your talking about the Flood. Your clean one second infected the next, no in between…..
actually think about jenkins in the halo books…. he was sort of partly infected? Johnson was an example of infected but with no effects ummmm dunno if thats relevant…
Eventually. I've got other things on my radar this month. I actually get a Christmas vacation this year, though, so I'm going to try to spend some time working on Reclaimer over the holiday.

Well in all fairness, he wasn't "partially infected" as such. He got attacked by the Flood, but the "Boron's Syndrome" killed the cells before they could alter his DNA.
And poor Jim, being sick never gives you any advantages does it
technically his "plasma disease" was really more of a "plasma induced epilepsy", which, if anybody doesnt know it (epilepsy) screws around with the electrical signals in your brain. the flood take over those signals to infect then reproduce but johnson's were to f___'d up to control, and so the infection forms eventually died out over time.
also, i missed this jenkins bit? i havent played H2/H3 :O so i might have missed somehing. i do remember hearing it in the books, tho…
hang on a minute i thought ferial created the flood, why would it attack him?
because it got out of control
So Ferial is sort of an AI, except he wasn't created artificially so he's just an NI?
He transferred himself digitally into a shatterbox and from there to a living being?
Can I ask why he even wanted to go back into his weak living body form when he could be an immortal machine or something.
And why would he break his own shatterbox? I thought shatterbox's kept him sane?

You do realize Jim that some geniuses can't spell? You're right though, spelling is very important in a first impression. Sometimes.

Because the Failsafe's Failed, and the backup Failsafe's failed. And the failsafe for the backup failsafe did't have a failsafe.
Murphy's law was proven that fateful day.
Ferial was the original Murphy, donchaknowit.

GASP!! That explains everything! So that means the Quantum Chromodynamic Gauge Invariant Legrangian was also invented by Ferial too!
Jim you're evil. Modern science as we know it is all a lie.

Nope, not everything, just several key elements for his own use.

World War I, actually. And yes, the tactic is called Scorched Earth and banned in 1977 by the Geneva Conventions.

How can you ban a military tactic, "All's fair in love and war" remember?

Jenkins was infected- He just had more control over his body because his onfection form was weaker then the others. I dunno, jes guessin
Yeah that one was injured, so he was able to exert some form of control over it, but it still messed with his head…
Oh and Jim?? WHEN WILL WE SEE MORE RECLAIMER!!!! Sorry my withdrawal symptoms are kicking in

@Jim: Thanks for the info.@xSOB a DooBy: I remember being sick helped me skip school and play vid games all day
.
Lucky you
If I ever get sick, my parents say I'm too sick to play video games
Yeah, that's sad. But, that does make sense.
How does that make sense? I can't see any reasoning in that? What, did his just wake from a ten year coma?
As in like his parents are afraid he'll contaminate the controllers.
