A glowing, blue symbol, possibly Forerunner in origin.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

For hundreds, thousands of lifetimes I slept, undisturbed by the universe, for there was none to disturb me.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

I slumbered, lest I lose myself to the insanity of isolation.

A room, displaying a hologram of a Halo.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

After the Forerunners fired their fatal weapon, I boxed myself, deactivating unnecessary systems...

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

...systems that none would need again for a very, very long time.

Another glowing blue symbol.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

Do you know what it is like, Reclaimer, to have once been a part of something larger...

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

...only to suddenly find yourself alone for the first time, to know that your exile is eternal?

A Forerunner structure, a planet setting on the horizon.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

The Forerunners did not build anything to fail. I am a lifeform. I am alive -- as are all my brethren. Our systems are continually self-repairing. They are organic, in their way.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

Short of total annihilation (an impossibility), we literally cannot die.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

Knowing this, knowing that we would very likely be alone for all time...

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

...it is a small wonder that more of us did not turn to the refuge of insanity.

And I'm pretty sure I've used the third image at least one other time in this series (extra credit to anyone who can find it). :)

232 other episodes to flick through taking up hours of time…... I accept your challenge, will the message self destruct in three seconds?

interesting wording, refuge of insanity. An eternal Refuge… Hmm does make the mind ponder.

I am wondering what kind of insanity Fortuitous Destiny has then? I was under the impression it was damage done by Ferial.

What is a schlub?? And I don't ever recall seeing that shot. It sort of looks like something you used in a comic with The Machine, but it's not quite the same…

I doubt it. It was more of a plot extension, as a way to reveal a bit more of the story, like the UNSC marine guy that wasn't infected.

But if I'm wrong, don't quote me :)

There is more than one kind of refuge—and they are not all necessarily related.

Too true :) I always like that guy, ugh, AI, machine person thing…. And what has happened to the UNSC AI, the one starting with T, what's her name??

          January 9, 2010 at 4:58 pm | #

Tran. She's sort of a part of the Cavalcade at the moment. We might hear her voice again…

Didn't you say that Portent and her had fused together, so that when ever we hear Portent we're actually hearing her too?

Not on this one, no. I periodically like to pull shots from the Bungie community to weave into the narrative.

Great work again Jim, your choice of words is very interesting :) And your screenshots are as always fantastic. But the one thing I do miss is the mouse-over text… You haven't added any for that last two comics :(

"I tried, but the stupid shatter-box wouldn't let me!!!"

Anyway, cool comic Jim… you know, I wonder what that junk was… I mean it had to be SOMETHING, it couldn't have just been random ones and zeros, in that case he could have just cleared it all away and deleted it… Well, if Adjuvant starts being easily irritated by stubbornness, we know it was those stupid pop-ups that never close!!!

When I saw the first panel, my first thought was "MELANCHOLY!!"
Then my second thought was "Oh wait… Machine".
Then my third thought was "Cheesecake".

Then I had some cheesecake and all was well in the universe.
