Reclaimer – Process in Progress

My buddy and Reclaimer fan BeardedPhantom is here for a visit for a couple of days and snapped a couple of pictures of me working on today’s comic (complete with canine companion). For those of you who have always wondered what it looks like while I’m building your favorite addiction, this brief gallery is for you.

This Is the Way the World Will End

I’ve been doing some thinking and planning the last several weeks, and I thought I’d take a moment to let you all in on my ultimate plans for Reclaimer. Basically, what I’ve decided is that I’m going to end the Reclaimer series right where I’d intended to back when I first started this comic. What this means is that Reclaimer will not run indefinitely, as I had most recently thought and expected but will have a very definite ending point. Now, mind you, the series end will not take place for several weeks yet and will, in fact, more than likely take another few months to complete. There are still a lot of loose ends to be brought together, a couple of Cavalcada to collect, mysteries to be revealed, and a super-villain to be faced down (for good or ill). Right now, I’m thinking that Reclaimer will close out its run somewhere in the vicinity of Comic #300, but that is by no means a definite thing at this point, as I don’t have concrete scripting completed that far ahead. So, for those of you who are hopelessly addicted, you still have plenty of time remaining to get your fix.

That said, one of the main reasons why I plan to end Reclaimer where I do is because I want to move on to other things—defined as another webcomic. I have been drawing and sketching almost every day for the last several weeks now, and I have long had a desire to start my own hand-drawn, hand-lettered webcomic that is of my own intellectual property. I do not have the time to run two webcomics concurrently, so something has to give. Reclaimer is based on a Microsoft IP, and so I am unable to do as much with Reclaimer as I would like. By launching a webcomic of my own design, I can branch out and do a lot more creatively. This webcomic idea has been percolating in the back of my mind for well over a year now, so I’m excited to be able to finally start putting it into action. If you want to stay abreast of updates, head over to Starchips and sign up for email updates. I’m hoping to get it officially off the ground sometime early in 2010.

If, by some miracle, I find that I am able to run two webcomics concurrently, then I certainly have plotlines that could continue the saga of our hero for a long time to come. I guess we’ll just have to see how things play out.

Status Update

Here’s the latest: Reclaimer will hopefully (fingers crossed) return to a regular schedule next week. It’s the annual winter prep around the farm at the moment, so most of my weekends and evenings for the last month or two have been heavily invested in making sure everything’s ready for the onset of cold weather. Additionally, my wife, sister-in-law, and I are headed down to Myrtle Beach tomorrow through Sunday for an American Heart Association horseback ride. Needless to say, I won’t be writing any new comics while there.

Hang in there, kids. Reclaimer will be back soon.

Schedulus Interruptus

Consider this a heads-up: For at least the next week, Reclaimer is going to be on hiatus. I’ve got a handful of obligations that are front-and-center currently, so I won’t have a lot of time for creating comics for a few days. I know the update schedule has been pretty spotty lately, and I do apologize for that. I’d like to be able to work on Reclaimer more than I have lately, but I’m afraid we’ll all just have to grin and bear it for a little while longer.

Halo 3: ODST – First Impressions

September 23rd, 2009 | by Jim

Against the odds, I managed to be able to drop into New Mombasa last night and begin my quest to solve a mystery while fending off hordes of Covenant troops. And I must say, I was blown away.

I, like so many others, watched the first cutscene video when it released a few weeks back, but I didn’t experience the true impact of that scene until I watched it in Hi-Def and heard it in Hi-Def audio through my Astro gaming headset. It was an amazing way of getting my feet wet with a new character.

Of course, from there it was all new territory. I met my first patrol within moments and quickly realized just how much I was going to have to rethink the way I play Halo. We were warned that we wouldn’t be able to just rush into a fight, guns a-blazing, and expect to be able to weather it well. But it’s one thing to hear it, and quite another to discover it first-hand and learn just how different an ODST is from a Spartan.

I quickly found that I enjoyed the experience of sneaking around the semi-deserted streets a great deal, picking fights from a distance by sniping Grunts with my auto-mag, and then turning their own needlers back on them and on their Brutish overlords. The mechanics of fighting as an ODST are a lot of fun, and you quickly learn that the best way to survive a fight is by looting Covenant weapons as necessary and doing as much of your killing as possible from a distance. At one point in the second mission, I was able to take down a Jackal sniper and use its weapon to take out a few Brutes. (Unfortunately, I failed to notice the other Jackal sniper perched a couple of blocks away.)

The soundtrack for Halo 3: ODST is another amazing work done by Marty. I listened to the whole thing yesterday before dropping into the game, but it was fabulous to hear the music in its native context. The music really adds to the experience, and the driving beat in one of the tracks makes a great backdrop for fighting through hordes of Covenant.

One other thing I really loved as a new HUD addition is the display of your progress toward earning various achievements. I was pleasantly surprised when the first popped into view and let me know how many kills I had left until I earned the appropriate achievement.

I spent two hours combing the streets of New Mombasa last night (an hour longer than I probably should have), and got about halfway into the second mission before deciding to call it quits. I’m already looking forward to getting boots on the ground again and digging around in the rubble—and taking out some of those Covenant bastards in the process. I did manage, however, to locate the final three skulls on the Mythic maps for those achievements and the Brainpan achievement. Now, I’m just three achievements away from owning Recon armor. It should be an interesting ride.

By the way, Heretic is a gorgeous remake of Midship, and I can’t wait to play some games in there again.

Contest – Halo 3: ODST

ODST

Welcome to the Official Reclaimer Halo 3: ODST Contest! Up for grabs this time around is a free copy of Bungie’s latest title, complete with an unlock code for Sgt. Johnson in Firefight mode. All you have to do to enter for your chance to win is submit an ODST-themed screenshot from Halo 3 – either from the campaign or from multiplayer – by Sept. 16th. That’s two weeks from the time of this posting. Fire up Halo 3, set up the best screenshot possible, and then email it as an attachment to reclaimercomic@gmail.com by midnight (EDT) on Sept 16, with Reclaimer Halo 3: ODST Screenshot Contest in the subject line. From there, I will open up the submissions to a community vote. The screenshot that garners the most votes will win a brand-new copy of Halo 3: ODST with Sgt. Johnson.

So, just to recap:

What: Your ODST screenshots (limit one per person)
When: Submit by 2400 (EDT) on Sept 16th
How: Email your shots to reclaimercomic@gmail.com with Reclaimer Halo 3: ODST Screenshot Contest in the subject line
The Prize: Halo 3: ODST and Sgt. Johnson

And if I can land some additional prizes in the meantime, then I’ll add those to the prize pool and open the field to runner-up prizes.

What are you waiting for? Start taking screenshots!

Edit: I really didn’t think this needed to be stated explicitly, but in case the above instructions weren’t clear enough, the screenshots you submit MUST be one of your own, not one you “borrowed” from a site like IGN or TeamXbox. In other words, you yourself have to have taken the shot from one of your own campaign missions, multiplayer or custom games, or Forge settings. Why would you think it would be fair for you to benefit from someone else’s work? Submitting a screenshot that is not yours will automatically and permanently get you removed from contention from this and all future Reclaimer contests. No exceptions. Consider yourselves warned.

Website Tweaks

September 1st, 2009 | by Jim

Observant Reclaimer fans may notice that the site looks slightly different this morning. The latest version of the ComicPress theme was officially released yesterday, so I spent some time last night (and early this morning) porting the site layout to the new theme. Hopefully, this will be the last time I have to make a major revision like this, since future ComicPress updates will not, in all likelihood, overwrite any of my customizations.

Most of the changes are on the backend and will, therefore, be all but invisible to you—but they go a long way toward making management of the Reclaimer website much easier for me. What you will notice, however, are a couple of minor visual updates on the front page. For starters, the sidebars, comic, and post entries all have boxes around them, with some background shading near the top. For Firefox users, the boxes have these classy rounded corners; not so much for IE users. (Yet another good reason to switch over to Firefox, if you haven’t already.) There is also a “Related Posts” lists with comic and blog entry to make it easier for readers to find similar content throughout the site, and the new comic nav menu features a “Random Comic” button.

The comic nav menu also now features a “Buy Print” button. I’m going to experiment with this a bit, but readers who want a copy of a specific day’s comic to hang on their wall can now purchase a copy. The purchase price will primarily cover cost of materials and service to print that page and shipping costs. If you’d like a print, just click the button and place your order.

I’m quite impressed with the changes in this latest version of ComicPress, and I’m looking forward to seeing how much time it saves me in the future.
