I read through the winners and honorable mentions for this contest. Some were well written and almost all of them had a very dark tone and ending. Not really my preferred reading but I still enjoyed them.

Did anyone from here submit? I know HSAR has something in his tagline about a story but I could not find it.

    Just curious.

Yeah, I wrote one but didn't end up submitting it, it just didn't have the polish that I wanted.

Would you be willing to post it here for us to read?

Hmm... maybe. I'll see if I didn't just delete it like so much else of my stuff. If I can find the time to polish it up and base it in a proper plotline, that is. I never really finished that part.

yeah I read them, the winner was okay, but it wasn't really exciting or anything. It was well written and I know what it had for it to win, but I thought the second one was much better. The last one was just weird, and the third was depressing. Seriously, why would they just drop off silver stars? Surely if they could have mustered a pelican, they would have dropped off supplies, rather than stupid silver stars. Why waste the trip?

I think they were trying to speak to the hopeless causes that the ODST's are thrown into on a regular basis and the martyrdom that ensues from these situations.

I realize that these are stories about war and all that ensues. Although I do have some concerns about how bleak these stories are written. I don't expect roses and sunshine at the end. I have lost too many friends to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to even begin to think that. Maybe it is my social view on the world and how it seems to be spinning down a darker path, either that or I am just paying closer attention to what it going on. Now I am just rambling.

Yep, that's what got me off writing the HBOFF story. Martyrdom sure gets boring after the fourth time. Not that I say martyrdom isn't great, but a reader wants entertainment, right?

Plus, I can't think of a single reason why foot soldiers would need to be deployed unless there was the standard Covenant-have-found-something, they-want-to-waste-thousands-of-infantry-to-capture-the-planet-and-get-it-because-they're-stupid excuse. Why not kick the navy's ass and glass the place?

Kind of what I thought, if you have overwhelming force and power, just flatten everything but what you want to keep and move on. Not very elegant and doesn't make much of a story but a hell of a lot more effective. It think that is why I play Starcraft so heavy handed and methodical. Flatten all of the bastards and sort it out later.

Now there are some real good writings out there but I think what a lot of people overlook is the fact that air/space power is a lot more than brute force weaponry, it can be very accurate. The story line has to reflect that or it is not believable.

My point exactly. But then, I couldn't reflect that if the story was about ODSTs, could I?

Speaking of which, Array probably won't be finished until mid-November at the earliest. Mock exams are in the way.
