@Dooby: My last post didn't make it through b/c of an Internet disconnection. My point was, why have a cruiser-class scout ship? I don't know about crew numbers - HSA tends to favour small ships - but the weaponry is serious business. 50 railguns places it in at least the Heavy Destroyer category, if not Light Cruiser. Not that this is a bad thing... the borders can be a rough place. Just pointing that out. The Light is currently the largest ship of the task force.

Distefant? We haven't heard from him yet. I'm just filling in stuff for my own reference, right now - the Drone Sub-Frigates are a good way of making throwaway ships without having to have throwaway characters, too.

MANDATORY PRE-MISSION SPACECRAFT DECLARATION FORM AE-890P

[NOTE: Owner wrote note at top of form: "Damn you all you upper bureaucrats!"]

    Ship Name: Typhoon Nomad
Ship Class: Multi-purpose Heavy Strike Craft
Armaments: 5 missile bays holding 150 missiles apiece, 5 hardpoint missile pods holding 50 missiles apiece, 1 aft missile bay holding 0 missiles (fired from internal missile bay stock). Authorised to carry and deploy nuclear missiles and packages up to super-crustbuster level. 4 rotary 150mm autocannon (guided-munition shells), 12 90mm autocannon (non-guided semi-armour-piercing), 1 reconnaissance drone launch bay holding 20 extreme-resolution stealth reconnaissance drones authorised to launch payload missiles. 5 q-switching light lasers, 10 point-defence solid-state lasers.
Armour: Heavy frigate-class adaptive impact-reactive stealth-enabled meta-polymer capable of deflecting and absorbing applied energy by the manipulation of small composite particles. Relatively weak to plasma weaponry and beam weaponry due to absorptive stealth nature. Additional polymer plating applied to critical structural areas.
Construction: One HSAI frigate-class fusion reactor. A custom design based on a Type-10 Shockwave missile deployment platform, the Nomad has superior engine capacity compared to anything in its class, giving it tremendous speed despite its lumbering weight. The redesign was very extensive, however, and currently the Nomad is 50% larger than the original Shockwave design, bearing three times the armour amount of the original design. The redesign also incorporated a frigate-class fusion reactor one of the old missile cargo bays, boosting shield power and the capacity for high-energy weaponry.
Engines: One interstellar-rated light-class Mark IX fusion ion-boosted hybrid engine, two light-class Mark IV combat drives. Quite manoeuvrable, high acceleration ceiling, high top speed.
Additional Information: Has interior bays capable of payload storage, equipped to deploy HSASO (SpecOps) troopers from orbit via orbital pod drop.

[NOTE: Owner added note: "Are you happy now? Do you want my house as well?"]

Sorry, that was a massive misunderstanding on my part. In my favourtie sci-fi TV shows, rail guns are essentially the equivalent of AA/point defenses, doing minimal damaged against larger vessels. As for the crew size, I was making an estimate based on the number of people needed to run a ship. Even a small ship requires a massive number of personnel which is why I was surprised when I saw your crew numbers. I can edit the class of the vessel or I can edit the post, but I personally thought that sort of ship would be relatively small compared to larger combat vessels with crews numbering in the thousands...

Ah, we should probably have sorted this out beforehand. In my mind, the only railguns worth placing on a ship are at least 15 metres long for short-range saturation-fire models, because battles are frequently fought across solar systems, and nothing else would do. Therefore, longer barrel = more damage, leading up to the 100-metre+ model currently being installed on the Light, which is slightly less powerful than the MAC of the Haloverse.

As for the crew estimation, HSA runs small ships. Very small ships. Their light corvettes are three-man affairs, their light frigates have crews in the 10s and 20s. More skill in less crew means less life support, meaning better mass/power ratio and smaller size. More power/mass and smaller size = hard to hit. The Light might well be a small Templar ship. I was making a statement based on my understanding, which seems a bit stupid to me now. Sorry.

I basically assumed that point-defence would be taken for granted, as the ship need only state the armament it would bring to bear against another. Otherwise I'd be there all day working out how many lasers are where, etc.

If railguns are your point defence, that's fine too. We simply have different estimations on what weaponry can do.

Oh, and if you're wondering why the fighter/bomber Nomad seems to be able to deploy nuclear bombs even larger than the Thunder herself, Hunter has a few connections.

Yep, that makes sense. I'll edit my post. As for the crewing Templar ships may not be as advanced as HSA ships, and they also have more room to allow scientists and research teams. And the extra weapons can be explained by the fact that it operates by itself for long periods if time, and needs the weapons to settle any battles by itself.

It looks good to me - and a scout cruiser could also be a sort of central gathering point for other light scouting craft too. I think I'm all good with all this stuff. HSA politics would certainly allow heavy railgun equipment to be retrofitted to other faction's ships, for the purposes of joint ventures - I like that idea a lot, and it also gave me a convenient place to gather everybody together.

I've got reasons and politics and higher story arcs for this thread, so don't worry about any of that.

    PRE-MISSION BRIEF

The Casters are a diplomatically-immune faction with motives and technology incomparable to our own. What they want is unclear, how they could get it is even less so. However, since making a few brief contact transmissions and one diplomatic meeting, contact with the Casters has been scarce.

However, fairly recently a colony in the Outer Spiral Arm (15 days travel with HSA transluminal acceleration arrays) transmitted that they had received firm contact with the Casters, with negotiations and trade underway. The Casters subsequently contacted colonies all along the outer edge of the outer spiral arm, none of which were affiliated to the UCE, UOSE or the UEE.

This all changed exactly two weeks ago. A stray emission of radio waves and neutrino bursts in identical, but unidentifiable, patterns was captured by one of the colonies' advanced detection platforms monitoring their sun. A diplomat mentioned this to the Caster diplomatic group, and after viewing the pattern immediately boarded their ships and left the system. Reports hold that all other diplomatic parties left at the same time.

Their vectors have been traced to a small binary solar system right on the edge of the Milky Way, which has no record of exploration even by the Templar corporation. The UCE and UOSE shipyard and communication activity has trebled in the last week, and we suspect that they will be launching an armed exploration group. For this reason, Spacetech, Templar and HSA will be constructing a joint task force to reach that system before any other group. Heading out in four days, the joint task force will consist of ships from all three factions and will set off with the aid of an HSA transluminal boosting station.

The aim is to find out why the Casters retreated and ran, and if possible to establish diplomatic relations with the Casters. Armed confrontations with the UCE and UOSE is likely, perhaps even certain.

    Affiliation: Spacetech
    Ship Name: Subjective Beauty
    Ship Type: Light Cruiser
Armament: 8 forward heavy energy projectors, 10 long-range pulse laser batteries, 28 medium-range heavy pulse laser turrets, 10 short-range solid-state laser batteries. 10 missile launch bays holding 500 missiles apiece. 1 hangar bay holding 20 strike craft and 25 anti-fighter drones, plus mission-specific spacecraft.
Armour: Standard Spacetech cruiser-class tungsten-titanium alloy with dense crystal-state artificial diamond weave sheathing. Heavy and limiting, but capable of taking heavy weapons fire comfortably.
Construction: Three standard cruiser-class fusion reactors, one cruiser-class auxiliary reactor. Like all Spacetech ships, the Subjective Beauty has multiple redundant frames throughout its construction maintaining structural strength even under 60% destruction.
Engines: Four heavy-class V9 fusion drives, sixteen interstellar-rated heavy-class V12 ion engines, one medium-class V3 secondary fusion drive, one V5 combat drive. Low manoeuvrability, medium acceleration ceiling. However, the brutal weaponry it carries removes the need for agility.
Additional Information: Crew of 275. Built as for an anti-destroyer role, the Subjective Beauty can take and deal a lot more damage than her size suggests, but she pays for this. Heavy armour and armaments means she lumbers around the battlefield and cannot easily chase destroyers to finish a battle.
The Subjective Beauty is currently en route to a classified HSA shipyard to await the retro-fitting of the Perpetuating Light as part of a joint strike force, having just been recalled from active duty elsewhere in the front lines.

    Character Biography:

    Full Name: Rykel Chun
    Affiliation: UCE
    Rank: Commander, UCE Naval Patrol

Training Received: Advanced Piloting Certification, Advanced Theoretical Astro-navigation, Advance Programming/AI Interface.

Bio: Citizen of the UCE, born on planet Dawnsford in the Trahell district, ward 9. Rykel's parents were unknown as he was raised in a state run orphanage since shortly after birth.

Psychology report: Commander Chun has never known the easy part of life. Being raised in an orphanage has given him the the drive and determination to fight for what he wants no matter what the cost. Once his devotion is given he will not falter. His ability to quickly assess and react to situations has brought him to where he is today. A highly regarded naval officer with a penchant for deliberate, thoughtful destruction.

Employment in ECU: From the start, Rykel had to fight for everything he wanted in life. His determination and intelligence were the only thing that allowed him to make his way up in rank in the rigidly stratified society of the ECU. Not being born to the elite society made advancement incredibly difficult but perseverance overcame.

    Ship Name: Shadow of Doubt
Ship Type: Class VI Medium Command Patrol Frigate
Weaponry: 10 barrel long range heavy vulcan railgun, 10 close combat/point-defense rapid response flux laser batteries, 2 medium plasma turrents, 10 missile bays holding 400 deck-plate penetrator missiles apiece. Port and starboard hangar bays with 2 unmanned fighters and an assault boarding craft each.
Armour: Multi-layer bio-reactive armour system. New to the UCE fleets deployment, this armours outer layer is a regenerative reactive skin that easily withstands small projectiles and destroys larger projectiles once they contact. The reactive armor layer can also deflects/channels up to medium energy weapon shots with minimal damage. The next layers under the reactive armor are designed to absorb energy weapon charges and shunt them to capacitors which harness the energy for reuse by the ships systems. These layers are a thin-film bio-monomer shield capable of protecting the ship from most small projectile and energy strikes. The physical armour underneath is 1/2 meter of laminate fused titanium silicate.
Construction: Two P-9 level fission reactors, one E-7 level shield generator reactor. The Shadow of Doubt has the standard crystalline HSS structure as in most frigates but has been retrofitted with molecularly bonded boron-carbonized superstructure sheathing members to withstand the impacts and stress of the vulcan cannon firing. These new patrol frigates have been redesigned around the main vulcan cannon, literally. The 30 meter long weapon is placed in a cradle in the shipyards and the rest of the ship is build around it.
Engines: One M-9 class II astro-nav main engine, two M-3 fusion engines for in and outer-atmosphere maneuvers, two MT-5 ion engines for high transluminal speeds. Crew of 50, with shipboard AI. This vessel was designed to patrol trade routes and pursue pirates. The upgraded engines allow for fast hit and run tactics and quick ambushes. The command nature of the ship allows for increased electronic suites for detection/evasion and to house the AI. The AI allows for a reduction in the crew compliment to the bare minimum needed for patrol duties. The ship also carries two 5 man squads of highly trained assault marines. Each is trained in special weapons and tactics and all carry a wide variety of customized weapons. Up close and personal is their specialty. There are 14 all-atmosphere powered battle armor suits prepped for use at all times.

The Shadow of Doubt is currently on patrol in the Greedan system hunting for a know pirate group that has been harassing the trade routes.

Alright then! We have plenty of ships and a few main characters, so I vote we start this party!! This looks like it should be pretty good considering what we have :) If this is just a exploration force, I'd hate to see what these guys muster for a full scale war :)

I have to agree Dooby, if these are the lighter ships I'd hate to see what they bring out when you get to carrier size and larger LOL.

I do have to ask though before we start, does anyone have room to spare on their ships for my fighter squadron? I can whip up a small escort carrier type to carry them if need be but thought I would ask first. As for Aaron he's probably lurking around on whatever ship is the flagship of our task force.

The Thunder or the Mist can both hold an extra fighter squadron quite comfortably - "mission-specific spacecraft" covers anything up to that. Theoretically, so could the drones, but they have no life-support systems so it wouldn't be a good idea.

If you guys want, then sure. I've more or less sorted out in my head a vague idea of how it's going to start - although Distefant may have to work his character into the UEE joint operation plot a little later. We could have an armed clash, I suppose... anyway, I've got to thank you, Dooby. The sentence about the Light being retrofitted was an excellent way of tying characters together.

Haha. We get to shoot the crap out of distefant :)
so are we checking out the Casters or what made them freak out? I think this will turn out pretty cool, though I'm not sure if I will be able to direct the way the story goes. I'll just go with the flow on this one, at least for now. So we all ready to go?? Start with a sort of mission briefing so we all know the way we're heading.

IC: "My Lord! We are receiving a communique from HSA HQ!!" reported the communications officer.
Lord Darrow Riland sighed. "What do they want now?"
"They are requesting all ship captains to go groundside. They said it was for the mission briefing my Lord"
Riland nodded "I was wondering when we would get to this. What's the status of the retrofitting?"
"Nearly complete Lord. Should be finished within a day. Did you want me to order a shuttle to take you down to the surface?" asked the executive officer.
"Please. And tell HSA I am on my way down" Riland commanded.
The officer nodded and relayed Darrow's words down to the surface while Lord Riland swept off the bridge in a flurry of cloth. As he strode rapidly down the halls of the ornate ship. As he walked down to the hangar, Riland fastened his sword to his belt. The sword was both ceremonial and functional. The edge was sharpened to a deadly point and the surface was polished to a shiny finish.
"Why can't they just do this over the comma?" Darrow wondered as he boarded the shuttle.

Mira leaned back into the heavily worn chair of the shuttle bridge.
"Alright people!! We are dropping out of FTL in a couple of minutes! I want us dark the second we drop out!!" barked Mira. "If HSA pick us up they will blow us out of the sky straight away!"
"We'll be ready boss. What are we doing here anyway?" asked the second in command.
Mira smiled. She had been preparing for the question for a while. "If the HSA, Templar and Spacetech are gathering, then we need to find out why. There has to be a very good reason for it"
The crew members nodded. No company would gather their forces for no reason. Whatever it was could prove valuable.

Hold on, change of thread needed. I'll create it now. May I suggest you repost over there?

As for the Casters... well, something has spooked them. The UEE needs to find out what scared them, why it scares them and what they can do about it. I have some good ideas, but you guys can come up with something too.

Easy now, my ship may not be a heavy hitter but we may have a few surprises in store for the unwary. Rykel hasn't lost a battle yet. Limped away from a few but never lost.

Not a heavy hitter? 10 heavy railguns matches if not surpasses most HSA light destroyers. Nobody doubts it's firepower. But can it outrun Drone Frigates capable of 150-gee turns and 5 gees of thrust?

    We'll have to see. ;D

Probably not, but they have to get a shot off to make any difference.......

"I got one!! I got one!!!" "Great, don't get cocky kid!" Can you name where that quote is from?

I think I will change the class of ship to a Hunter/Killer class. Mean little packages of fun.

Hmm... sounds like a Star Wars quote. And that means Han Solo.

In-Character: I hate Hunter/Killers. One damn well nearly took the stern off my supporting carrier once.
