Oh, nice move, sir! I must say, your technique is definitely improving!

RECLAIMER

Can the commentary, Tran. We haven't the time for it.

TRAN

RECLAIMER

This Archimedes seems pivotal. What exactly is it?

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

Archimedes is a computer.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

It was the original and foundational cipher of Precursor society.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT

With it, they were able to calculate many legendary advancements in the universe.

Viper sought out Archimedes as the ultimate weapon, little knowing what sorrow such action would produce.

What happens when you destroy a virus that is designed to be destroyed?

It does the next thing it is supposed to do.

In this case, it fragmented, scattered like so much broken glass, and dug its way down into every system everywhere.

It leaped from me to everything I am connected to -- and from there to even more.

They were infected the moment they touched Archimedes - Viper.

VIPER: Good. Then the team was able to bring Archimedes online. I hope they're unleashing hell on those ONI bastards.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: They successfully planted it into the communications array, yes, but that is where the problem begins.

VIPER: Sounds like mission accomplished to me.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: NO!!

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: I have isolated you from the outside world, and so you are unaware of current events.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: Allow me to enlighten you.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: The abomination Archimedes was harboring when you found it has been unleashed on the galaxy.

VIPER: What the hell are you talking about? We programmed a super-intelligent bloodhound to invade the UNSC network to uncover all ONI files on the Spartan, Reclaimer, and Blackhammer projects and make them public. And that was just the first step!

VIPER: This thing could tear through any security wall the ONI spooks have ever dreamt up. There's no way they'd have been able to stop it, let alone think about slowing it down.

VIPER: Archimedes - the ultimate hacking device, the lever by which we were going to move the UNSC behemoth from its perch.

VIPER: Bastards have had it coming for a long time.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: The program that Viper designed, this... bloodhound, was never executed. It does not even exist anymore.

The walls behind the stasis field holding the Viper soldier beginning to fade out.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: It was overwritten by an older program, one of Precursor design, and that has been launched, instead.

VIPER: But what does it do?

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: I will tell you, but first...

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: ...allow me to welcome you to my 'home'.

Viper still standing in the stasis field.

VIPER: We already know what Archimedes does. We had intended to use it as a method of undermining the UNSC - especially ONI - accessing top-secret project files, and turning that corrupt organization on its head.

VIPER: For all I know, we already have.

Looking up at the Viper soldier.

VIPER: How many others from my squad did you capture like this?

CAVALCADE: Two.

VIPER: Ah. And by the way you're interrogating me, Archimedes must have been retrieved successfully.

Left side of Viper.

CAVALCADE: Indeed. I was unable to restore my systems to adequate functionality in time to prevent its escape. I was not even aware of its presence here until your blundering about caught the attention of what few subroutines I had running at the time.

VIPER: And we're not bitter about this, of course.

Close in on Viper from the right.

CAVALCADE: I am perturbed, but not because it was you - Viper - who was able to steal Archimedes away. That was hardly my fault. No, it is because you have no idea what trouble you have started, the danger that Archimedes poses to all sentient life in the universe.

Back away from Viper a bit.

CAVALCADE: Not that Viper would have any idea how to use it.

VIPER: I already told you we did. We were going to turn one of ONI's little toys back on them, force them out into the open, make them answer for their crimes in human experimentation.

CAVALCADE: FOOL! Archimedes is no device of human construction. It is not even Forerunner. It is far, far older than that.

Up and away from Viper.

CAVALCADE: Ferial played you all for fools - and now Viper belongs to his growing army of mind-slaves.

CAVALCADE: You have opened the metaphorical Pandora's Box.

Viper: A painful, blinding flash of light, and I was snapped back into my body. I cannot say that the experience was altogether pleasant.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: Do not get too comfortable, Viper. The physical form I have provided you with is merely a temporary accommodation.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: I have questions for you, which you will answer -- and afterward, you will be put back into suspended emulation.

Viper member now surrounded by just blue light.

VIPER: What do you wish to know?

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: Whether you know it or not, the soldier of the UNSC Project Blackhammer rebelled at the behest of an entity known as Ferial.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: I want to know what you intended to do.

VIPER: I don't know what you're talking about.

INDIGENOUS ADJUVANT: No, of course you do not. Ferial is a master at weaving the invisible scheme. I am little surprised that you -- all of you -- would be unaware of the ways in which Ferial manipulated even the 'mighty' Viper.

Voiceover: It was the voices that aroused me. Muffled. Indistinct.

But for all that, still identifiably Sangheili.

Then nothing for the longest time.

Once awakened, it gave me pause to consider my surroundings. Some kind of framework. I reached out to touch it, only--

I had no form. It was silly of me to think I had one. Yet instinct told me that I had HAD such physicality once.

I cannot remember.

The matrix in which I found myself shifted - and I moved with it.

Multiple dimensions opened before me into a vertiginous panoply of color.

Explosions...

Debris...

Psychosis...

A vacuum washed out away from me, returning just as quickly.

And in a metaphorical heartbeat, it was over.

An illusion.

Or something else.

An event, experienced from a great distance.

A memory then...
...a rendered form.
Human.

Mine.

An association of several things in rapid succession:

Viper.
Archimedes.
"I think we woke something up, sir."

Yesterday marked one year since the inception of Reclaimer! It’s actually a little hard to believe that things are still going this strong a year later. When I started Reclaimer, I didn’t really know what to expect. I knew that I wanted to write and produce a Halo-based comic, but I had no idea if I could something like that. It’s been a growing process, and it’s been a lot of fun so far. I have you all to thank for a lot of that. I would have enjoyed doing this, even if I’d been the only one to read it, but having an audience to play to makes this a thousand times more worthwhile to me – and you all have been immensely patient with me and gone through the growing pains with me. It’s been an awesome year, and I look forward to another fantastic year with all you wonderful people.

I had hoped to try to have the first official Reclaimer short story written in time for this posting, but alas, life has again gotten in the way. For my wife and me, this is the middle of our pre-winter prep for our farm, so a lot of my free time in the evenings this week has been spend getting stalls ready for horses and repairing barns. I do plan to work on a couple of Reclaimer projects over the weekend, though, so hopefully I’ll have something to show for that come Monday.
